Non-local criteria for the borehole problem: Gradient Elasticity versus Finite Fracture Mechanics

A. Sapora et al.

Summary: Two nonlocal approaches, Gradient Elasticity and Finite Fracture Mechanics, are applied to analyze the behavior of a circular hole in an infinite elastic medium under remote biaxial loading and internal pressure. While GE is nonlocal in material behavior and local in failure criterion, FFM is local in material behavior and nonlocal in fracture criterion. Both approaches involve a characteristic length and can lead to almost identical critical load predictions when the internal lengths are properly related.

On the anisotropy of shear fracture toughness in rocks

Morteza Nejati et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical analyses were conducted to assess true mode II fracture toughness, K-IIc, fracture energy, G(IIc), and the associated fracture process zone (FPZ) in anisotropic rocks. The studies provided a theoretical basis for the sinusoidal variation of K-IIc and simplified relations for the direction dependence of G(IIc) in an anisotropic plane. Experimental data validated the theoretical model and showed that values of K-IIc and G(IIc) are significantly higher than mode I values, with insight into the nature of the FPZ of a true mode II crack.

Extending the theory of critical distances to quasi-brittle fracture

S. V. Suknev

Summary: The paper presents the results of theoretical and experimental studies on brittle and quasi-brittle fracture of plaster plates with a circular hole under non-uniform compression. Modified fracture criteria based on the theory of critical distances are proposed to predict the critical load at the instant of crack initiation. Experimental verification indicates that the developed criteria can effectively describe the influence of hole size and boundary conditions on the fracture of quasi-brittle materials.

Anisotropic failure behaviour and breakdown pressure interpretation of hydraulic fracturing experiments on shale

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests on Longmaxi shale samples from southwest China revealed significant brittle failure characteristics and anisotropic phenomena, with main failure patterns identified as split, split-bending, and slip along the bedding plane. Anomalously high breakdown pressure was observed in the samples at different layer orientations, which led to the development of a new tensile stress-based model for interpreting such unusual pressures. This study may have practical implications for field hydraulic fracturing operations.
