A novel generalization ability-enhanced approach for corrosion fatigue life prediction of marine welded structures

Chao Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a generalization ability-enhanced approach for corrosion fatigue life prediction was proposed. Data augmentation and analysis of influence factors were conducted to improve prediction accuracy. The results showed that the proposed model outperformed existing models in terms of average error and error standard deviation. The introduced average gradient-signal-to-noise ratio effectively evaluated the generalization ability of the model, which was higher than that of linear regression. The predicted results under different conditions demonstrated the good prediction accuracy and generalization ability of the proposed model.

Weld toe versus root fatigue failure mode and governing parameters: A study of aluminum alloy load-carrying fillet joints

Shizhu Xing et al.

Summary: Two fatigue failure modes, weld toe cracking and weld root cracking, can occur in load-carrying fillet welded connections. The fatigue life associated with weld root cracking is typically lower and exhibits more variability, especially for welded aluminum alloys. This paper examines the transition behaviors of fatigue failure modes in load-carrying fillet welds made of aluminum, considering parameters such as plate thickness, weld penetration, joint misalignment, weld material, and ultrasound impact peening (UIP). Experimental and theoretical studies are used to propose a quantitative fillet weld sizing criterion for preventing weld root cracking in fillet-welded aluminum connections.

A multi-axial vibration fatigue evaluation procedure for welded structures in frequency domain

Xianjun Pei et al.

Summary: Modeling vibration fatigue of welded structures in the frequency domain is challenging due to stress singularity at weld locations and interactions of multiple vibration modes. A comprehensive procedure utilizing mesh-insensitive method and modal decomposition approach is proposed to address these issues. A non-proportionality correlation function is introduced to relate the power spectrum density of normal and shear traction stresses, establishing an effective stress parameter.

Generation of compressive residual stress at the root of tube-to-tubesheet welded joints in a heat exchanger

Kuiling Shen et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive exploration of the influence of local post welding heat treatment on residual stress in tube-to-tubesheet welded joints. The results indicate that the stress concentration at the root of the welded joints is the main cause of stress corrosion cracking in heat exchangers. Local post welding heat treatment significantly reduces the residual stress in the joints, and the proposed compressive stress manufacturing method achieves the fabrication of compressive stress at the root, thereby improving economic benefits.

A universal constitutive model for hybrid stress-strain controlled creep-fatigue deformation

Tianyu Zhang et al.

Summary: Due to stress relaxation, it is challenging to obtain creep-dominated data using conventional strain-controlled creep-fatigue interaction (CCFI) tests. To overcome this deficiency, a novel hybrid stress-strain controlled creep-fatigue interaction (HCFI) loading is developed, which can control the ratio between fatigue damage and creep damage. Extensive comparisons of two CFI responses provide a better understanding of the newly proposed HCFI loading.

Prediction of welded joint fatigue properties based on a novel hybrid SPDTRS-CS-ANN method

Chao Feng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a prediction model for the fatigue properties of welded joints, using a hybrid algorithm combining single-parameter decision-theoretic rough set (SPDTRS), cuckoo search (CS), and artificial neural network (ANN). The model improves the accuracy and stability of fatigue properties prediction by analyzing the weight of influencing factors and avoiding overfitting and local optimization. The experimental results show that the predicted S-N curves and fatigue life have a small error compared to the actual results, demonstrating the model's reliability and potential for fatigue design of welded structures.

A data-driven analysis for fatigue failure mode identification in load-carrying fillet welded joint with mechanical data augmentation

Ziqi Zhao et al.

Summary: Weld toe and weld root failures are the dominant fatigue failures in load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joints. Among them, weld root failure is more affected by weld quality and throat size, and should be eliminated. This study proposes a weld sizing criterion based on two weld leg sizes and weld penetration, obtained using a data-driven approach and mechanical-directed data augmentation technique.

Low cycle fatigue evaluation of welded structures with arbitrary stress-strain curve considering stress triaxiality effect

Xianjun Pei et al.

Summary: This work conducts load-controlled low-cycle fatigue tests on butt and lap joints, and proposes a new structural strain range parameter to characterize the fatigue behavior of weldments. The new method, which can deal with arbitrary material elastic-plastic behavior, captures the lateral structural constraint effect through the stress triaxiality parameter. The new fatigue parameter shows superior data transferability, correlating high and low-cycle fatigue data of steel, aluminum, titanium, and magnesium weldments into one master E-N curve.

Summary: With the increasing use of large and ultra-large pressure vessels in petrochemical and power generation industries, traditional local post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) procedures are no longer feasible, prompting the introduction of a new primary-secondary heating based local PWHT technique (PS-PWHT). Both finite element residual stress modeling and experimental residual stress measurements have shown that the PS-PWHT method can significantly reduce welding-induced residual stresses, even leading to some level of compressive residual stresses at the vessel weld region.
