Tensile and fatigue behavior of novel dissimilar resistance spot welds of AA5754 to steels: interplay of intermetallic layer, weld nugget diameter and notch root angle

Liting Shi et al.

Summary: AA5754 sheet was resistance spot welded to high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel sheet and low carbon steel (LCS) sheet using multi-ring domed electrodes and multiple solidification weld schedules. The study investigated the intermetallic compound layer, weld nugget diameter, and notch root angle. Results showed that the elevated Mn content in HSLA steel promoted the formation of a thinner and more uniform IMC layer compared to LCS. Changing from HSLA sheet to LCS sheet softened the aluminum weld nugget. Fatigue tests demonstrated that fatigue life in Al-steel spot welds is greater than aluminum sheet joined to itself, and fatigue life was greater for AA5754-HSLA steel RSWs than AA5754-LCS.

Mechanoresponsive luminogen (MRL)-based real-time and visible detection method for biaxial fatigue crack propagation

Zhe Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, fatigue crack propagation in aluminum alloys under biaxial loadings was successfully detected using a pure organic mechanochromic luminescent material. Both the behavior of fatigue crack propagation and luminescence emission were investigated. Real-time detection of fatigue crack length and propagation path was achieved using fluorescence distribution. These MRL-based methods may offer new opportunities for nondestructive evaluation and structural damage assessment.
