Mitochondrial function in intestinal epithelium homeostasis and modulation in diet-induced obesity

Thomas Guerbette et al.

Summary: This review discusses the impact of high-fat diet on mitochondrial function in intestinal epithelial cells and its role in regulating intestinal homeostasis. The findings suggest that high-fat diet may disrupt intestinal epithelial barrier, dysbiosis, and loss of epithelial homeostasis through its effects on mitochondrial function.

Mitochondrial function in intestinal epithelium homeostasis and modulation in diet-induced obesity

Thomas Guerbette et al.

Summary: Systemic low-grade inflammation in diet-induced obesity is associated with dysbiosis and disturbance of intestinal homeostasis, potentially due to impaired IEC mitochondrial function. HFD consumption may affect IEC mitochondrial function through gut-derived metabolite production and fatty acids, leading to altered homeostasis in the small intestine and colon.

Production of hydrogen sulfide by the intestinal microbiota and epithelial cells and consequences for the colonic and rectal mucosa

Francois Blachier et al.

Summary: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a bacterial metabolite that affects the intestinal physiology and physiopathology through multiple sources and metabolic pathways in colonocytes. Different concentrations of H2S production have different effects on colon mucosa, playing a crucial role in cellular energy metabolism and development.

Gut microbiota markers associated with obesity and overweight in Italian adults

Vanessa Palmas et al.

Summary: This study characterized the gut microbiota of overweight/obese patients and normal-weight controls of Sardinian origin, identifying differences and associations with obesity-related factors. The results showed a decrease in Bacteroidetes taxa and an increase in Firmicutes taxa in obese patients, indicating a potential link between microbiota composition and obesity. Additionally, an increase in bacterial taxa with endotoxic activity was observed in obese patients compared to normal-weight controls.

High-fat diet-induced colonocyte dysfunction escalates microbiota-derived trimethylamine N-oxide

Woongjae Yoo et al.

Summary: It was found that chronic exposure to a high-fat diet can increase levels of circulating trimethlamine N-oxide, a potentially harmful metabolite generated by gut microbiota.
