Evaluating the incidence of spinal cord injury after spinal cord stimulator implant: an updated retrospective review

Nasir Hussain et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence of spinal cord injury after spinal cord stimulator implant using a large-scale claims database. The results showed that spinal cord stimulator implant continues to be a safe procedure for chronic pain patients. However, risk factor mitigation strategies should be undertaken prior to performing the procedure in order to prevent spinal cord injury.

A Prospective Analysis of the Use of Intraoperative Neuromonitoring for Mapping the S1 Dorsal Root Ganglion Location to Determine Ideal Lead Positioning and Predict Postoperative Programming

Steven M. Falowski

Summary: This study demonstrates the reliability and accuracy of using intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) to map the location of the S1 dorsal root ganglion in asleep patients. The results indicate that IONM is effective in confirming dorsal placement, mapping the position, and guiding postoperative programming.

Multicenter Retrospective Analysis of Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulator Placement Using Intraoperative Neuromonitoring in Asleep Patients During Early Periods of Adoption

Steven M. Falowski et al.

Summary: In a retrospective analysis of 304 leads placed in 93 patients undergoing DRG stimulation therapy using IONM, there were 14 alerts, two complications, but no permanent or severe adverse events, and no revisions. All alerts led to changes in approach. The study demonstrates the utility and accuracy of IONM in confirming proper placement of a DRG electrode and maintaining a low adverse event profile, showing that it can be safe and accurate in real-world use with new users.

Allergy Considerations in Implanted Neuromodulation Devices

Austin Brown et al.

Summary: Allergic reactions to implanted neuromodulatory devices are rare but have been observed and reported. This review highlights the importance of screening patients for allergies before implantation and recommends a multidisciplinary approach for suspected cases. If an allergic reaction is suspected, ruling out infection and conducting patch testing with collaboration between healthcare professionals and device manufacturers are crucial steps for safe reimplantation.

Lead Migration in Neuromodulation

Semira Mollica et al.

Summary: The study introduced a technique involving titanium mini-plates to secure surgically implanted leads, reducing the risk of lead migration or electrode displacement. This method proved to be effective in preventing postoperative lead migration in various spinal and extra-cranial neuromodulation implants.

Spinal Cord Stimulation via Percutaneous and Open Implantation: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Examining Complication Rates

Amy Z. Blackburn et al.

Summary: This study reviewed complications of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) via percutaneous and open implantation in various pain conditions and found that equipment-related complications were the most common. Percutaneous implantation resulted in fewer medical-related reinterventions and explants due to infection compared to open procedures.
