Summary: A study in the United States showed a decrease in the proportion of liver injury caused by antiepileptic drugs in recent years, which is more common in non-seizure indications and allergic skin reactions, and more common in African Americans.

Incidence and risk factors of drug-induced liver injury

Xiaoyun Li et al.

Summary: The epidemiology and aetiology of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) vary across different countries and populations. Antibiotics are the leading cause of DILI in Western countries, while traditional Chinese medicine is the primary cause in Eastern countries. The incidence of hepatotoxicity induced by herbal and dietary supplements is increasing globally. Although several risk factors for DILI have been described, there are no confirmed risk factors for all-cause DILI.

Clinical Characteristics and Outcome of Drug-Induced Liver Injury in the Older Patients: From the Young-Old to the Oldest-Old

Rianne A. Weersink et al.

Summary: Older patients with DILI show higher comorbidity burden and polypharmacy, with a more severe liver injury characterized by cholestatic phenotype. Additionally, they have increased non-liver-related mortality, suggesting a different approach is needed to predict outcomes for this population.

Comprehensive analysis and insights gained from long-term experience of the Spanish DILI Registry

Camilla Stephens et al.

Summary: Data from the Spanish DILI Registry indicates that older patients with hepatocellular liver injury and those with additional liver conditions are at higher risk of mortality. The type of liver injury, patient sex, and analytical values of aspartate aminotransferase and total bilirubin can also help predict clinical outcomes.

Drug-induced liver injury associated with antiseizure medications from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS)

Brad K. Kamitaki et al.

Summary: This study quantified reports of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) associated with older and newer antiseizure medications (ASMs). Majority of newer generation ASMs were not significantly linked to DILI. Future research utilizing various data sources will be crucial for continuous surveillance of DILI.

Severe drug-induced liver injury caused by levetiracetam-A case report and review of the literature

Andreas Rogalewski et al.

Summary: Levetiracetam is a commonly prescribed anti-seizure medication with good tolerability, but there is a rare risk of severe liver injury. Monitoring serum transaminase values, discontinuing the medication, and considering cortisone immunosuppression in serious cases are important management strategies.

Trends in prescribing patterns of antiepileptic drugs among older adult inpatients in a Brazilian tertiary center

Telma Assis et al.

Summary: The study found a significant reduction in the prescription of suboptimal AEDs to older adult inpatients with late-onset epilepsy, with phenytoin remaining the most commonly prescribed AED. There was an increase in the prescription of lamotrigine and levetiracetam over time. Convulsive status epilepticus and acute symptomatic seizures associated with certain etiologies were identified as risk factors for the prescription of suboptimal AEDs.
