Force of droplet impact on thin liquid films

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the mechanical properties and morphological changes of droplet impact on a thin liquid film. Compared with a dry surface, the impact force on the thin liquid film followed a similar pattern but with a slightly higher peak value and a delayed time of arrival. Modeling the impact process as a non-elastic collision accurately described the temporal evolution of the impact force.

Results showed that the splash morphology is sensitive to the film thickness, while surface characteristics affect the expansion of the crown base. The breakup of the active central jet depends on the film thickness and impact velocity.
