Qualitative and quantitative analysis of neutron irradiation effects in SiC/SiC composites using X-ray computed tomography

Jose David Arregui-Mena et al.

Summary: This study characterized SiC/SiC composites using X-ray computed tomography and found that internal stresses caused by temperature gradients and irradiation were the main driving factor for cracking, with the sharp edges of relatively large pores being common stress concentrators.

Tension-tension fatigue behavior of a melt-infiltrated SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites in a combustion environment

Ragav P. Panakarajupally et al.

Summary: The experimental thermo-mechanical facility simulated the combustion environment for jet engine components, evaluating two different MI ceramic matrix composites under fatigue loading. Results showed a significant decrease in fatigue life in the combustion environment, attributed to the hostile conditions. Post-test microscopy and electrical resistance monitoring were used to understand damage mechanisms and stress.

High-temperature thermal expansion behaviour of C/SiC studied using an in-situ optical visualisation method and numerical simulations in a quartz lamp array heating environment

Zhi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study used an in-situ optical visualisation system to observe the variation in gap width between C/SiC specimens during heating, showing that the gap width first decreased and then increased due to heat conduction and expansion of the base. Different working conditions were studied and the thermal insulation performance of specimens with and without thermal barrier coatings was compared, providing theoretical support for the study of the thermal expansion behaviour of high-temperature structural ceramics.

FEM analysis of the stress response and failure mechanism of SiC-coated Cf/ SiC composites during thermal shock

Zhixun Wen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the stress response and failure mechanism of SiC-coated Cf composite at high temperatures, revealing that the most critical position for failure is near the fiber yarn/matrix interface in the matrix. Different fiber orientations exhibit similar stress states, with interactions between fibers leading to a twisted state. The possible failure modes and mechanisms of composites with and without SiC coating were discussed.

In situ investigation of failure in 3D braided SiCf/SiC composites under flexural loading

Changqi Liu et al.

Summary: The mechanical failure of 3D 4-step braided SiCf/SiC composites processed by precursor infiltration pyrolysis was studied under flexural loading to investigate the conditions at failure. Optical imaging and X-CT imaging were utilized for in situ investigation of microstructure-related failure mechanisms. The observed failure modes included matrix cracking, inter- and intra-bundle debonding, and fiber breakage. Multiple cracking in compression was found to be the ultimate failure mode.
