Study of post-impact behaviour of thin carbon/epoxy laminates subject to fatigue tensile loading

A. Rogani et al.

Summary: This article discusses the experimental and numerical study of post-impact damage propagation in thin carbon/epoxy woven composite laminates subjected to fatigue tension. The study shows that the damage propagation is governed by matrix damage, and increases in impact energy or displacement level lead to faster initiation and propagation of post-impact damage. The FEM based semi-continuous approach effectively models the damage propagation scenario and speed depending on the number of cycles for laminates with plies of the same orientation.

Fatigue and damage analysis on aeronautical CFRP elements under tension and bending loads: Two cases of study

Francesco W. Panella et al.

Summary: This study focuses on experimental monitoring procedures for investigating stresses and damage settlement during fatigue tests of CFRP elements under bending and tensile loads. Various monitoring methods, such as ultrasonic inspection and thermographic full field analysis, are used to monitor damage accumulation and mechanical properties degradation. The effects of localized bending loads and artificial composite wrinkle presence within a notch on delamination initiation are investigated in different specimen types. The study also suggests that combined monitoring approaches, including thermo-elastic and dissipative phenomena, along with ultrasonic through thickness properties variations, can offer precise damage state and localization during tests.

A new methodology for thermoelastic model identification in composite materials using digital image correlation

Francisco de Sa Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel method for spatial identification of thermoelastic models in composite structures using full-field experimental measurements, overcoming the limitations of assigning thermoelastic models at the local level for posterior Thermoelastic Stress Analysis. Tests on laminated tensile coupons with various stacking sequences validate the proposed concept and show the significant effect of material properties variability on the accuracy of the method. The proposed methodology provides a viable and computationally efficient method for selecting appropriate thermoelastic models at the local level, while avoiding inaccuracies associated with conventional Thermoelastic Stress Analysis.
