Can We Train Multisensory Integration in Adults? A Systematic Review

Summary: The ability to efficiently combine information from different senses is crucial for daily activities, but it varies among individuals and is affected by age-related conditions. Neurodevelopmental disorders like dyslexia and autism are also associated with impaired multisensory perception. The extent and effectiveness of training in modifying multisensory perception is unclear. This systematic review identified 27 studies that showed evidence of improved task performance through in-task feedback training using psychophysics protocols, and exercise-based training also showed promising results. However, more research is needed to determine the generalizability of the training and its effects on clinical populations.

Age as a moderator of the relationship between planning and temporal information processing

Summary: Planning is a fundamental mental ability related to executive functions, characterized by specific temporal dynamics reflected in temporal information processing (TIP). This study examined age-related differences in the contribution of TIP to planning, showing that in young participants TIP contributed to dynamic cognitive flexibility but not in elderly participants. The results suggest that better planning is related to longer preplanning and more efficient TIP, especially in problems with high goal ambiguity.

Perceptual training narrows the temporal binding window of audiovisual integration in both younger and older adults

Summary: There is growing evidence that multisensory processing changes with age, often resulting in an enlarged temporal binding window and negative clinical outcomes. This study investigated the effects of perceptual training on younger and older participants and found that training improved their audiovisual timing estimation and narrowed the temporal binding window. However, the training had less impact on prior expectations regarding the source of audiovisual signals in older adults.
