Analysis of Fecal Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) in Healthy Children during the First Two Years of Life: An Observational Prospective Cohort Study

Beata Loniewska et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 456 fecal samples from 86 children to investigate the influence of perinatal factors on the concentrations of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) during the first two years of life. The results showed that SCFA concentrations increased until 12 months and then stabilized. Factors such as antibiotic treatment during pregnancy, mode of delivery, feeding formula, and maternal weight gain were found to be associated with changes in SCFA concentrations. Higher SCFA levels were observed in infants born to mothers with normal pre-pregnancy weight and adequate weight gain. Additionally, female infants had higher levels of acetic acid at 2 years old. The study suggests the need for further long-term epidemiological studies in this area.

Human gut homeostasis and regeneration: the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites

Claudia Marcela Arenas-Gomez et al.

Summary: The healthy human gut is a balanced ecosystem where interactions between host cells and representatives of the gut microbiota play a vital role in maintaining gut functionality and overall health. Impairment of the gut epithelium can lead to various negative consequences, but certain components and metabolites of the gut microbiota can contribute to its repair and regeneration. Targeted modulation of the gut microbiota may be a potential therapeutic approach to improve gut homeostasis and overall health outcomes.

Short-chain fatty acid: An updated review on signaling, metabolism, and therapeutic effects

Kaliaperumal Rekha et al.

Summary: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) have various beneficial effects such as improving metabolic function, inhibiting insulin resistance, and ameliorating immune dysfunction. They can act as signaling molecules by stimulating G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and suppressing histone deacetylases (HDACs).

Actin cytoskeleton dynamics during mucosal inflammation: a view from broken epithelial barriers

Susana Lechuga et al.

Summary: Disruption of epithelial barriers is a key pathogenic event of mucosal inflammation, attributed to abnormal structure and permeability of epithelial junctions. The altered biochemical and physical environment of inflamed tissues affects the dynamics of the actomyosin cytoskeleton, leading to barrier disruption.
