The Miocene wetland of western Amazonia and its role in Neotropical biogeography

Carina Hoorn et al.

Summary: This article discusses the significance of the Pebas System as a wetland during the Miocene period. The system played a crucial role in the origin, dispersal, and adaptation of species in various contexts, and its dynamic wetland landscape and connections with neighboring regions were key factors.

Giant Tree Frog diversification in West and Central Africa: Isolation by physical barriers, climate, and reproductive traits

Kyle E. Jaynes et al.

Summary: Secondary sympatry amongst sister lineages is closely associated with genetic and ecological divergence, suggesting that closely related species require differences in ecological and/or reproductive isolation traits to coexist in secondary sympatry. In this study, three giant tree frog species showed species-level divergence coinciding with a period of large-scale forest fragmentation during the late Pliocene. Environmental niche models revealed that the three species occupy distinct environmental niches and display modest morphological differentiation, particularly in tympanum diameter and male advertisement call. Additionally, climatic refugia, precipitation gradients, marine incursions, and potentially riverine barriers have generated phylogeographic structure at the intraspecific level throughout the Pleistocene and Holocene.

Isolation by environment and recurrent gene flow shaped the evolutionary history of a continentally distributed Neotropical treefrog

Felipe Camurugi et al.

Summary: This study reveals two genetic lineages of a widespread South American treefrog that diverged in the mid-Pleistocene with continued gene flow. The scenario of isolation with migration until the Last Glacial Maximum was supported, followed by recent population expansion in northeastern Brazil and stability in southwest South America. Isolation by environment was the best predictor of genetic distance between populations, indicating the importance of environmental niches in shaping genetic differentiation.

Genetic diversity in North American Cercis Canadensis reveals an ancient population bottleneck that originated after the last glacial maximum

Meher Ony et al.

Summary: The study reveals high genetic diversity and limited gene flow in wild populations of Cercis canadensis, with populations divided into two major genetic clusters likely originating from an ancient population surviving the last glacial maximum. The current population structure likely emerged from one ancient population in the eastern U.S., which then diverged into two contemporary clusters, suggesting that populations have expanded from previous glaciation events into several post-glacial refugia within the species' current geographic range.

A survival story: evolutionary history of the Iberian Algyroides (Squamata: Lacertidae), an endemic lizard relict

Catarina Rato et al.

Summary: The Iberian Algyroides has a narrow distribution range in SE Spain and is threatened by climate change and habitat degradation. Evolutionary history includes population bottleneck and recovery/expansion during the Last Glacial Maximum, resulting in six monophyletic lineages with little genetic differentiation and geographic coherency. ENMs predict a future retraction and shift in suitable habitats for conservation policies to consider.

Influence of Holocene habitat availability on Pacific gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) population dynamics as inferred from whole mitochondrial genome sequences and environmental niche modeling

Anna Bruniche-Olsen et al.

Summary: Environmental changes and commercial whaling have significantly reduced whale populations, including gray whales in the North Pacific. However, genetic signals of recent population declines have not been detected despite sustained habitat loss and a commercial whaling bottleneck. Large haplotype sharing between gray whales in Russian and Mexican waters suggests limited population structure.

The riverine thruway hypothesis: rivers as a key mediator of gene flow for the aquatic paradoxical frog Pseudis tocantins (Anura, Hylidae)

Emanuel M. Fonseca et al.

Summary: Rivers, landscape, and climate can alter patterns of gene flow and shape intraspecific genetic variation. The study on highly aquatic frog Pseudis tocantins in central Brazil found that genetic differentiation among localities is mostly explained by river connectivity, while elevation, slope, and climate have little impact. Migration patterns took place directionally from upstream to downstream sites.
