The evolution of larger size in high-altitude Drosophila melanogaster has a variable genetic architecture

Quentin D. Sprengelmeyer et al.

Summary: Important uncertainties persist regarding the genetic architecture of adaptive trait evolution in natural populations. This study investigated a unique natural population of Drosophila melanogaster from the Ethiopian highlands and found a persistently variable genetic basis for evolved traits, indicating a moderately polygenic architecture with relatively strong effects. Population genetic analyses and gene ontology enrichment analysis provided hypotheses for genes and functional processes contributing to these adaptive trait changes. The results suggest a recurring pattern of polygenic adaptation in this species.

Summary: Even if a species' phenotype remains unchanged, the underlying molecular mechanism may change. This study uses linear system theory to explore how the gene network supporting a conserved phenotype evolves, and how the exploration of distinct mechanisms can lead to reproductive incompatibility between independently evolving populations.

Maximum SNP FST Outperforms Full-Window Statistics for Detecting Soft Sweeps in Local Adaptation

Tiago da Silva Ribeiro et al.

Summary: Local adaptation can result in increased genetic differentiation at targeted genetic variants and nearby sites. Simulation analysis revealed that SNP-level F-ST (specifically F-ST_MaxSNP) had better power to detect complete or mostly complete soft sweeps, while full-window statistics were more effective in detecting partial hard sweeps. The power of F-ST_MaxSNP depended on sample size and required robust precautions and quality control. Applied to real data from Drosophila melanogaster populations, F-ST_MaxSNP detected unique outlier genes and functional categories, supporting its value in detecting local adaptation.

Ethanol resistance in Drosophila melanogaster has increased in parallel cold-adapted populations and shows a variable genetic architecture within and between populations

Quentin D. Sprengelmeyer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the genetic properties of adaptive trait evolution using the recurrent evolution of enhanced ethanol resistance in Drosophila melanogaster as a model system. The research reveals the differences in genetic architecture of ethanol resistance evolution among populations in different regions, and identifies potential contributions of genes with annotated roles in various biological processes. Simulation-based analyses suggest a moderately polygenic architecture for ethanol resistance evolution, indicating the need for larger-scale studies to better understand the genetic basis of adaptive evolution.
