Worsening Spread of Candida auris in the United States, 2019 to 2021

Meghan Lyman et al.

Summary: The number of Candida auris cases in the United States has been increasing each year, with a significant rise in 2021. Echinocandin-resistant cases have also increased in 2021, which is concerning as echinocandins are the first-line therapy for C auris infections. These findings highlight the need for improved detection and infection control practices for preventing the spread of C auris.

Increasing Number of Cases Due to Candida auris in North Italy, July 2019-December 2022

Camilla Sticchi et al.

Summary: Candida auris was first detected in Italy in July 2019, with one additional case reported in January 2020. Nine months later, a large number of cases were reported in northern Italy. A total of 361 cases were detected between July 2019 and December 2022 in various regions of Italy, with 146 deaths. The majority of cases were considered to be colonization, and only one had a history of travel abroad. Most isolates showed resistance to fluconazole.

Candida auris as an Emergent Public Health Problem: A Current Update on European Outbreaks and Cases

Nicholas Geremia et al.

Summary: Candida auris is a newly emerged fungal pathogen with high mortality rates, persistent candidemia, inconsistencies in susceptibility testing, and misidentification issues. Multidrug-resistant and pandrug-resistant strains are increasing. Outbreaks caused by C. auris have been reported in hospitals across Europe, and sporadic cases have been detected in all European countries. Enhanced control measures are necessary due to the difficulty in controlling the survival and colonization abilities of C. auris.

Impact of FKS1 Genotype on Echinocandin In Vitro Susceptibility in Candida auris and In Vivo Response in a Murine Model of Infection

Dipti Sharma et al.

Summary: Echinocandins are frontline antifungal agents for the management of invasive infections due to multidrug resistant Candida auris. This study evaluated echinocandin resistance in 199 C. auris isolates from 30 centers across India, identifying FKS1 mutations as key factors. The study found that FKS1 genotype is a more accurate predictor of in vivo response than MIC, and other factors such as chitin content can also influence the response to echinocandins.

Increasing number of cases and outbreaks caused by Candida auris in the EU/EEA, 2020 to 2021

Anke Kohlenberg et al.

Summary: The number of cases and outbreaks of Candida auris infection or carriage, as well as the number of countries reporting these cases, increased in the European Union and European Economic Area between 2020 and 2021. Adequate laboratory capacity and surveillance are necessary for early detection and rapid implementation of control measures.

Candida auris Candidemia in Critically Ill, Colonized Patients: Cumulative Incidence and Risk Factors

Federica Briano et al.

Summary: Candida auris (C. auris) is an emerging nosocomial pathogen that has shown a sharp rise in colonization and infection cases during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study found a high cumulative incidence of C. auris candidemia in colonized patients, with multisite colonization being an independent risk factor for candidemia development.

The molecular and genetic basis of antifungal resistance in the emerging fungal pathogen Candida auris

Jeffrey M. Rybak et al.

Summary: Fungal infections cause significant health problems, and the resistance to antifungal drugs poses a threat to public health. Some pathogenic fungi display resistance to major antifungal drugs. This article provides an overview of the current knowledge on the molecular and genetic basis for antifungal resistance in this fungal pathogen.

Clade-specific chromosomal rearrangements and loss of subtelomeric adhesins in Candida auris

Jose F. Munoz et al.

Summary: Candida auris has four major clades with different infection characteristics and drug resistance profiles. While Clade II primarily causes ear infections and is susceptible to antifungal drugs, Clades I, III, and IV are responsible for ongoing outbreaks of invasive and multidrug-resistant infections.

Summary: The study identified the recent introduction of MDR Candida auris in an Italian hospital, likely facilitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. All isolates belonged to the South Asian clade, with most transmission associated with a ward converted to a dedicated ICU during the pandemic.
