Comparison of robot-assisted versus fluoroscopy-assisted minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion for degenerative lumbar spinal diseases: 2-year follow-up

Lianlei Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes between robot-assisted minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (RA MIS-TLIF) and fluoroscopy-assisted minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (FA MIS-TLIF) in patients with degenerative lumbar spinal diseases. The results showed that the operative time was longer in the robot-assisted group, but the number of intraoperative fluoroscopies for patients and surgeons was lower, screw placement was more accurate, and there was less decrease in disc height at the proximal adjacent segment.

State of the art review of new technologies in spine deformity surgery-robotics and navigation

J. Alex Sielatycki et al.

Summary: Computer-based navigation and robotic-assisted guidance systems for pedicle cannulation are at least equivalent, and in several reports superior, to freehand techniques in terms of radiographic accuracy. However, there is currently no clinical evidence that the use of navigation or robotic techniques leads to improved patient outcomes or decreased overall complications or reoperation rates, and the use of these systems may substantially increase surgical costs.

Pedicle Screw Placement in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Comparison between Robotics Coupled with Navigation versus the Freehand Technique

Gabriel S. Linden et al.

Summary: The study compared the outcomes of hybrid RAN and FH surgeries in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients and found that although hybrid RAN surgeries took longer, after matching factors like screw placement number and BMI, the surgical outcomes and safety were comparable to FH surgeries.

Morphometric analysis of the proximal thoracic pedicles in Lenke II and IV adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: an evaluation of the feasibility for pedicle screw insertion

Ryan H. Guzek et al.

Summary: This study found that in AIS patients with Lenke II and IV curves, the concave pedicles tend to be narrow and dysplastic, making pedicle screw insertion challenging. Almost half of all concave pedicles have morphologic characteristics that make them too small to accommodate a PS, requiring alternative fixation anchors.

Uniplanar Cannulated Pedicle Screws in the Correction of Lenke Type 1 Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

Yiwei Zhao et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the clinical use of uniplanar cannulated pedicle screws for correcting Lenke type 1 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, finding significant improvements in postoperative spinal curvature and rotation with better outcomes in the uniplanar screw group compared to the multiaxial screw group. The use of uniplanar screws was shown to enhance the accuracy of pedicle screws and facilitate vertebral derotation.

Initial intraoperative experience with robotic-assisted pedicle screw placement with stealth navigation in pediatric spine deformity: an evaluation of the first 40 cases

Derek Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study presents the initial experience with pedicle screw placement using the newest generation of spinal robotics for treatment of pediatric spinal deformity. The accuracy rate of screw placement was 98.7%, and there were no clinically relevant screw related complications, showing promising results of combined robotic-navigation techniques in pediatric patients.
