Breast carcinoma is a highly prevalent and deadly cancer in females, causing a significant number of mortalities and incidences. Conventional cancer treatments have limitations in terms of side effects and efficacy. Nanotechnology, specifically magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), has emerged as an innovative approach for cancer management and detection. This article summarizes the applications of MNPs in cancer therapy, focusing on the potential of MNPs in treating breast cancer.
Breast carcinoma is among the most commonly diagnosed cancer in females, responsible for 15% of all cancer affiliated mortalities and 23% of all cancer incidence. Based on the recent GLOBOCAN 2020 figures, malignancy of breast is responsible for One in every-Eight cancer identified and 2.3 million newly diagnosed incidences in both gender coupled. Thus, making it the one of the deadliest illnesses. Even though the conventional cancer treatments like radiotherapy, surgery, and chemotherapy manage the condition and minimise the chances of relapse. But they produce severe side effects and poor chemotherapeutic efficacy due to reasons like cytotoxicity to healthy cells, low specificity, resistance to multiple drugs, and fast drug clearance. The use of nanotechnology has emerged as an innovative and successful approach for optimising medicine delivery for cancer management and detection. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), in particular, have sparked significant attention in recent years because to their small size, excellent colloidal stability, high cytocompatibility, selective tumour targeting, and very effective hyperthermia under the influence of magnetic field. Here we summarize various applications of MNP in cancer therapy. Further, different research studies that have been conducted to assess the potential of MNPs in the therapy of breast cancer has also been reviewed.
