Quantum collision models: Open system dynamics from repeated interactions

Francesco Ciccarello et al.

Summary: This article presents an extensive introduction to quantum collision models (CMs), which are microscopic system-bath models used for investigating dynamics of open quantum systems. The article discusses the definition and general properties of CMs, their application in deriving master equations, their connection with quantum trajectories, and their use in non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics, among other topics. The state of the art in each research area related to CMs is reviewed. The article also includes complementary appendices that review standard concepts and tools of open quantum systems, making the material accessible even to readers with a basic background in quantum mechanics.

Lyapunov equation in open quantum systems and non-Hermitian physics

Archak Purkayastha

Summary: This work aims to establish the Lyapunov equation as a fundamental and efficient formalism for linear open quantum systems, providing valuable insights beyond the limitations of quantum master-equation descriptions; the research focuses on deriving the Lyapunov equation in different approximation forms, discussing its relation to quantum master equations, positivity, accuracy, additivity issues, describing dark states, general perturbative solutions, and quantum regression formulas; the understanding of the origin of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing the dynamics and separating it from quantum and thermal fluctuations is key to the derivation.

Quantum correlations in PT-symmetric systems

Federico Roccati et al.

Summary: In a paradigmatic setup, researchers studied the dynamics of correlations to observe PT-symmetric physics, finding that quantum correlations exhibit different long-time behaviors in the PT-broken phase and at the exceptional points. At the exceptional point, classical correlations diverge while quantum correlations tend to zero.

Quantum Jumps in the Non-Hermitian Dynamics of a Superconducting Qubit

Weijian Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the dynamics of a driven non-Hermitian superconducting qubit perturbed by quantum jumps, highlighting their critical role in causing decoherence and breakdown of adiabatic evolution, especially near exceptional points. The enhanced decoherence rate is attributed to the cube-root topology of non-Hermitian eigenenergies. The research shows how quantum jumps play a key role in extending the applications of classical non-Hermitian systems to open quantum systems for sensing and control.
