Factors influencing the behavior of bystanders to workplace bullying in healthcare-A qualitative descriptive interview study

Sandra Jonsson et al.

Summary: Workplace bullying is a serious problem that affects individuals, organizations, and society. This study aims to explore the factors that influence bystanders' behavior in healthcare settings. The findings suggest that negative organizational culture, deficiencies in management, fear of negative consequences, lack of awareness, excusing of bullying behavior, and bystanders not being part of the dominant group contribute to bystanders' passive behavior. To effectively address workplace bullying, organizations need to take it seriously, take action, and support both the targets and bystanders.

Bullying behaviors were described as abuse of authority that negatively impacted victims' education and career, with overwork being the most commonly reported pattern. Perpetrators were mainly consultants and men, while victims were commonly women. More methodologically robust trials of anti-bullying interventions are needed to address this issue effectively.
