Ankle fractures in Finland: 118,929 operatively treated between 1987 and 2019

Ville Happonen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the inpatient data of operatively treated ankle fractures over a 33-year period in Finland and found that the number of operatively treated ankle fractures has leveled off, but now more difficult surgeries are being performed in elderly patients.

Association of Delayed Surgery for Ankle Fractures and Patient-Reported Outcomes

Summary: This study aims to assess the association between wait time for ankle fracture surgery and patient-reported clinical outcomes. The results show that waiting more than 7 days for surgery is associated with poorer outcomes and increased pain compared to early surgery.

Analysis of 6851 foot and ankle injuries from 2010-2017 in an emergency department

Patrick Pflueger et al.

Summary: This study investigated the demographic changes, temporal occurrence, and development over the years of patients with foot and ankle injuries in an emergency department. Ligamentous ankle injuries were common in younger patients, while ankle fractures showed a bimodal age distribution in women, with bimalleolar and trimalleolar fractures being more common in women aged 65 years and older.

Increasing age and modifiable comorbidities are associated with short-term complications after open reduction and internal fixation of ankle fractures

Summary: This study used a large validated database to evaluate the relationship between postoperative complications and age in ankle fractures. It found that the incidence of complications increases with advanced age, with the largest increase occurring at age 78 and above.

The effect of BMI on long-term outcomes after operatively treated ankle fractures: a study with up to 16 years of follow-up

Diogo Vieira Cardoso et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess long-term patient-reported outcomes in patients with operatively treated ankle fractures and the effect of BMI on these results. The results showed that obese patients had worse long-term outcomes, including increased pain, poorer function, and greater impairment in everyday life after operatively treated ankle fractures. The study also found that pain and function linearly declined with increasing BMI.

Short-term outcome of isolated lateral malleolar fracture treatment is independent of hospital trauma volume or teaching status: a nationwide retrospective cohort study

Malte Vehling et al.

Summary: Significant differences were found in in-hospital outcomes for ankle fractures between high-volume centers (HVCs) and low-volume centers (LVCs), likely due to differences in patient severity and complexity of fractures. Structural and organizational differences, such as extended preoperative stays and higher teaching rates, were also apparent. No differences were observed in mortality rates.

Operatively treated ankle fractures in Switzerland, 2002-2012: epidemiology and associations between baseline characteristics and fracture types

Diogo Vieira Cardoso et al.

Summary: Ankle fractures are common and the incidence has been increasing. A population-based epidemiological study on 2045 operatively treated ankle fractures over a 10-year period identified significant differences between men and women in terms of age, obesity, diabetes, smoking, and accident type. Men were associated with Weber C fractures while women were associated with trimalleolar fractures.

Spinal Anesthesia Associated With Increased Length of Stay Compared to General Anesthesia for Ankle Open Reduction Internal Fixation: A Propensity-Matched Analysis

Molly Vora et al.

Summary: This study compared the duration of surgery, length of stay, and rates of postoperative adverse events in patients undergoing open reduction internal fixation of ankle fracture using spinal versus general anesthesia. Spinal anesthesia was associated with increased length of stay, while there were no significant differences in complication rates, unplanned readmissions, or duration of surgery between the two groups.

Spinal Anesthesia Using Ropivacaine Leads to Earlier Ambulation After Total Hip Arthroplasty

Vanja Contino et al.

Summary: The study compared patients who received ropivacaine or bupivacaine spinal anesthesia for THA, and found that the ropivacaine group showed better outcomes in terms of ambulation time, post-anesthesia care unit transition time, and complications compared to the bupivacaine group. Ropivacaine has clear advantages over bupivacaine for rapid recovery during THA, especially in the ambulatory setting.

Lisa Reider et al.

Summary: This retrospective study found a decrease in the incidence of extremity fracture hospitalizations among older adults in the United States between 2003 and 2017, primarily due to a decline in low energy femur fractures. Additionally, mortality rates related to extremity fractures also decreased during this period.
