Soil structure effects on deformation, pore water pressure, and consequences for air permeability during compaction and subsequent shearing

Xinjun Huang et al.

Summary: This study conducted compaction and shearing measurements on structured soils and homogenized substrates, finding that soil deformation behaviors varied at different normal stress levels, with structured soils showing less deformation at 50 kPa and significant increase in deformation at higher stress levels.

Mechanical Soil Database-Part I: Impact of Bulk Density and Organic Matter on Precompression Stress and Consequences for Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity

Richard Schroeder et al.

Summary: The mechanical strength of agricultural soils is influenced by various soil properties and functions. The soil strength database SOILMECHDAT-Kiel, developed by the Horn Research Group in collaboration with BONARES, includes analyses of soil samples from over 460 profiles. The study found that sandy soils have higher stability, while loamy and silty soils with high organic matter content are less stable. However, further data is needed to fully explain this variation.

Short-term effects of compaction on soil mechanical properties and pore functions of an Andisol

Jose Dorner et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the short-term effects of soil compaction on the physical quality of Andosols. The results showed that soil compaction increased bulk density and mechanical strength, while decreasing the volume of macropores and water infiltration. Wetting and drying cycles also contributed to an increase in bulk density.

Deformation and pore water pressure change during static and cyclic loading with subsequent shearing on soils with different textures and matric potentials

Xinjun Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effects of compaction and shearing on soil deformation and pore water pressure. The results showed that compaction decreased soil void ratio and volume, while shearing slightly increased void ratio and volume. The higher the stress levels and initial matric potential, the more prominent changes in soil deformation and pore water pressure.

Traction and repeated wheeling-effects on contact area characteristics and stresses in the upper subsoil

L. ten Damme et al.

Summary: The study found that high trailer load increases drawbar pull of the tractor without affecting steering mode; traction influences the contact area characteristics of the tires, but repeated wheeling has no significant effect on the contact area characteristics.

Effective stress and pore water dynamics in unsaturated soils: Influence of soil compaction history and soil properties

Oluwaseun Temitope Faloye et al.

Summary: The study found that effective stress and changes in pore water pressure are largely affected by the prevailing matric potential in the soil. Additionally, changes in soil structure caused by tillage, organic carbon, and clay content influence the magnitude of effective stress and pore water pressure during loading. The porewater pressure measured under static loading is sampling direction dependent due to differences in hydraulic conductivity and pore continuity.

Soil structure response to field traffic: Effects of traction and repeated wheeling

L. ten Damme et al.

Summary: This study quantified the effects of traction and repeated wheeling on soil structural properties independently in a compaction experiment conducted on sandy loam. Traction had a clear effect on deforming some soil structural properties, while repeated wheeling caused gradual effects and led to differences in soil properties compared to reference soil after six passes. The findings highlight the significant impact of traction on soil compaction, although the mechanisms behind this deformation remain speculative.
