Cyano(fluoro)borate and cyano(hydrido)borate ionic liquids: low-viscosity ionic media for electrochemical applications

Jarno Riefer et al.

Summary: This article describes the synthesis and characterization of low-viscosity room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and [BnPh3P](+) salts with various cyano(fluoro)borate anions. The RTILs were obtained with high yield and purity, allowing their application in electrochemical devices. The physicochemical properties of the RTILs were assessed, including thermal stability, melting and freezing behavior, density, electrochemical stability, dynamic viscosity, specific conductivity, ion diffusivity, and cytotoxicity.

Boranes Paving the Way to Anionic Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbenes (Ani-cAACs)

Ludwig Zapf et al.

Summary: The first examples of anionic cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (Ani-cAACs) with borane substituents have been successfully synthesized. The borane substituents modulate the sigma-donor or pi-acceptor abilities compared to their neutral analogues. A B(CN)(3)-substituted Ani-cAAC was generated and used in situ, leading to the high-yield synthesis of C2F5BF2-Ani-cAAC 6. Reactions of these novel ligands with elemental selenium and chloro(triphenylphosphine)gold(I) produced anionic selenium adducts 7 and 8 and the Ani-cAAC gold complex 9. The properties of these compounds and theoretical calculations provide insights into the electronic and steric properties of these unique and promising anionic cAACs.

Ethyl-, vinyl- and ethynylcyanoborates: room temperature borate ionic liquids with saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon chains

Nils Schopper et al.

Summary: Ethyl-, vinyl- and ethynyltricyano and dicyanofluoroborates were synthesized on a gram scale from commercially available potassium trifluoroborates and trimethylsilylcyanide. The resulting EMIm-salts displayed hydrophobic properties as room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), along with large electrochemical windows, high thermal stabilities, low dynamic viscosities, and high specific conductivities. These promising properties make them ideal materials for electrochemical applications.

Mathias Haering et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of unprecedentedly stable tricyanoborylplumbate anions were obtained. The reaction conditions and reactant composition were found to control both the stability and the reaction rate of the anions.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Functionalized Cyanopyridines Yield an Anolyte with an Extremely Low Reduction Potential for Nonaqueous Redox Flow Batteries

Thomas P. Vaid et al.

Summary: Cyanopyridines and cyanophenylpyridines were investigated as anolytes for nonaqueous redox flow batteries. Adding a phenyl group can improve the stability of the radical anions and voltage efficiency, with 3-CN-6-PhPy and 3-CN-4-PhPy showing the most promising results.
