Standardized mortality ratios in multiple sclerosis: Systematic review with meta-analysis

Natasha Smyrke et al.

Summary: The study indicates that people with multiple sclerosis have a reduced overall survival and an increased risk of death, particularly from cardiovascular, respiratory and infectious diseases, accidents, and suicide. This situation does not seem to have changed over the past 65 years.

Deaths related to pulmonary embolism and cardiovascular events before and during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic: An epidemiological analysis of data from an Italian high-risk area

Davide Voci et al.

Summary: A study conducted in Veneto, Italy found a significant increase in all-cause mortality during the COVID-19 outbreak, primarily driven by COVID-19 and its complications. The number of pulmonary embolism-related deaths showed a more prominent increase during the second wave, suggesting possible underdiagnosis during the first wave.

Increased risk of death from COVID-19 in multiple sclerosis: a pooled analysis of observational studies

Luca Prosperini et al.

Summary: The pooled analysis indicates a 24% increased risk of death from COVID-19 in patients with multiple sclerosis. However, confirmation in larger population-based studies is needed due to difficulties in COVID-19 case detection and cohort heterogeneity.

Parkinson's disease related mortality: Long-term trends and impact of COVID-19 pandemic waves

Ugo Fedeli et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the impact of COVID-19 on PD-related mortality rates. The results show that during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a steep increase in age-standardized PD-related mortality rates, highlighting the need for surveillance of PD-related deaths. The excess mortality rate for PD-related deaths during the pandemic was 19% based on underlying cause of death and 28% based on multiple causes reported on death certificates.

Mortality and cause of death in multiple sclerosis in western Norway 1950-2021: a registry-based linkage study

Summary: Excess mortality among persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) has declined during the past seven decades, possibly due to improved diagnostics, better symptomatic treatment, and access to disease-modifying treatments (DMTs).

COVID-19 clinical outcomes and DMT of MS patients and population-based controls

Elisa Longinetti et al.

Summary: This study investigated the risks and associations with disease-modifying therapies in multiple sclerosis patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that multiple sclerosis patients had increased risks for COVID-19 and other severe outcomes compared to population controls, but these risk increases were not significantly different from previous years. The risk conveyed by disease-modifying therapies was smaller than previously assumed, likely due to better control for confounding factors.
