Social cognition deficits and biometric signatures in the behavioural variant of Alzheimer's disease

Ellen H. Singleton et al.

Summary: The study examines the social cognition impairments in patients with behavioural variant of Alzheimer's disease (bvAD) and compares them with patients with behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and typical Alzheimer's disease. The findings suggest that patients with bvAD exhibit similar but milder social cognition impairments compared to bvFTD, and greater impairments compared to typical Alzheimer's disease.

Experiences of families of people living with frontotemporal dementia: a qualitative systematic review

Tamami Shiba et al.

Summary: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a disease characterized by atrophy of the frontal and/or temporal lobes. Patients with FTD experience language and emotional disturbances from the onset, and communication problems can affect them and their families even before diagnosis. This review explores the experiences of families of people living with FTD and highlights their confusion, suffering, and communication difficulties. The findings emphasize the importance of early support for families, as it has a positive effect on their quality of life.

Evaluation of Discriminative Detection Abilities of Social Cognition Measures for the Diagnosis of the Behavioral Variant of Frontotemporal Dementia: a Systematic Review

Alessandra Dodich et al.

Summary: The use of social cognition measures in the diagnosis of bvFTD shows potential in clinical settings, especially in emotion recognition and theory of mind tasks. However, the lack of standardized cognitive measures, varied task formats, and limited normative data hinder study comparability. Further comparative studies are needed to determine the best choice for ensuring high diagnostic accuracy in bvFTD assessments.

Distinguishing Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia From Primary Psychiatric Disorders: A Review of Recently Published Consensus Recommendations From the Neuropsychiatric International Consortium for Frontotemporal Dementia

Peter S. Pressman et al.

Summary: The behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia is the second most common cause of dementia in individuals under 65 years old. In early 2020, the Neuropsychiatric International Consortium for Frontotemporal Dementia published consensus recommendations to help clinicians distinguish between bvFTD and primary psychiatric disorders. These recommendations were developed by a consortium of 45 scientists and clinicians from over 15 different countries, covering aspects such as history taking, neuropsychological assessments, clinical scales, neuroimaging, biomarkers, and genetics.

Novel instructionless eye tracking tasks identify emotion recognition deficits in frontotemporal dementia

Lucy L. Russell et al.

Summary: The study developed a set of simple, instructionless tasks of emotion recognition using eye tracking, aimed at assessing social cognition in individuals with behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). Results showed that eye tracking is a viable tool for evaluating social cognition and can overcome some issues associated with standard psychometric tasks.
