Myocarditis and pericarditis associated with SARS-CoV-2 vaccines: A population-based descriptive cohort and a nested self-controlled risk interval study using electronic health care data from four European countries

Sophie H. H. Bots et al.

Summary: This study found that mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines and potentially AstraZeneca are associated with increased myocarditis risk in younger individuals, although the absolute incidence remains low. More data on children (≤11 years) are needed.

Postmarketing active surveillance of myocarditis and pericarditis following vaccination with COVID-19 mRNA vaccines in persons aged 12 to 39 years in Italy: A multi-database, self-controlled case series study

Marco Massari et al.

Summary: This study in Italy found an association between myocarditis/pericarditis and the mRNA vaccines BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 in individuals aged 12 to 39. The highest risks were observed in males aged 12 to 39 and in males and females aged 18 to 29 vaccinated with mRNA-1273. The findings should be considered in the context of mRNA vaccine effectiveness against severe COVID-19 disease and death.

Myocarditis in SARS-CoV-2 infection vs. COVID-19 vaccination: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Navya Voleti et al.

Summary: This study compared the incidence of myocarditis between COVID-19 vaccine recipients and individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2. The results showed that the risk of myocarditis was over seven times higher in the infection group compared to the vaccination group. Male and younger populations had a higher risk of myocarditis, and the incidence of myocarditis decreased gradually over time after vaccination.

Increased risk of myocarditis and pericarditis and reduced likelihood of severe clinical outcomes associated with COVID-19 vaccination: a cohort study in Lombardy, Italy

Giovanni Corrao et al.

Summary: This study assessed the harms and benefits of COVID-19 vaccination. The results showed that the risk of myocarditis was highest among 16 to 19-year-old men who received the Moderna vaccine. The balance between harms and benefits was mostly favorable for other subgroups.

Effusive-constrictive pericarditis after the second dose of BNT162b2 vaccine (Comirnaty): a case report

Giacomo Maria Viani et al.

Summary: This case report describes a patient who developed effusive-constrictive pericarditis (ECP) shortly after receiving the second dose of the BNT162b2 vaccine. No previous cases of ECP related to the SARS-CoV2 vaccine have been documented. Treatment according to guidelines resulted in clinical improvement. This case suggests a possible rare adverse reaction to the vaccine, similar to natural infection, and further research is needed to confirm a causal relationship.
