A step forward, but still inadequate: Australian health professionals' views on the genetics and life insurance moratorium

Jane M. Tiller et al.

Summary: The survey found that the majority of Australian health professionals were aware of the partial ban on the use of genetic test results in life insurance underwriting, however, they still believed that there were shortcomings in this self-regulatory measure. While some HPs felt that the moratorium alleviated some genetic discrimination issues, most still had concerns about self-regulation, financial limits, and the temporary nature of the ban.

The persistent lack of knowledge and misunderstanding of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) more than a decade after passage

Andrea Lenartz et al.

Summary: The study found that participants had a low subjective knowledge of GINA, with most people lacking understanding of the scope and details of GINA's protections. Respondents were relatively concerned about genetic discrimination and may decline genetic testing as a result. The research highlights continued public concern about genetic discrimination and a lack of awareness and understanding of GINA.

Genetic discrimination: introducing the Asian perspective to the debate

Hannah Kim et al.

Summary: Our research found that policy discussions and actions on genetic discrimination in seven Asian jurisdictions primarily focus on employment, insurance, disability, marriage, and family planning, with only South Korea having adopted specific legislation to prevent genetic discrimination. The study emphasizes the importance of these jurisdictions proactively engaging with the challenges of genetic discrimination through coordinated regulatory and governance mechanisms in order for Asia to benefit from recent scientific and technological progress in genomics.
