Is there Evidence for the Suggestion that Fatigue Accumulates Following Resistance Exercise?

Ryo Kataoka et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the potential mechanisms underlying fatigue accumulation, focusing on peripheral and central fatigue. While peripheral fatigue is associated with depletion of energy substrates and accumulation of metabolic byproducts, central fatigue development is more diverse and may require prolonged recovery periods. The evidence for the presence of fatigue accumulation with resistance training is inconclusive, and further research is needed to elucidate whether fatigue can accumulate over time.

Hamstring muscle activation strategies during eccentric contractions are related to the distribution of muscle damage

Valentin Goreau et al.

Summary: Individual activation strategies during hamstring strengthening exercises have not been thoroughly explored for their consequences on muscle damage distribution. This study found a significant correlation between the distribution of activation and the distribution of damage in the hamstring muscle heads during maximal eccentric contractions.

Muscle Shear Elastic Modulus Provides an Indication of the Protection Conferred by the Repeated Bout Effect

Emeric Chalchat et al.

Summary: This study found that the mechanical properties of the quadriceps, as evaluated by shear wave elastography, were less affected when a second bout of eccentric-biased exercise was performed 2 weeks later. It was also observed that the first bout of exercise conferred protection against extensive muscle damage, possibly through an adaptation of the muscle stiffness.

Muscle Damage Indicated by Maximal Voluntary Contraction Strength Changes From Immediately to 1 Day After Eccentric Exercise of the Knee Extensors

Mikio Shoji et al.

Summary: This study found that the recovery rate of MVIC torque predicted changes in neuromuscular function following eccentric exercise of the knee extensors, but was not correlated with muscle soreness and stiffness changes.

Injuries in Muscle-Tendon-Bone Units: A Systematic Review Considering the Role of Passive Tissue Fatigue

Summary: The systematic review of injuries in the muscle-tendon-bone complex revealed that the majority of injuries were consistent with the accumulation of material fatigue damage during repetitive submaximal loading regimens.
