Agro-economic prospects for expanding soybean production beyond its current northerly limit in Europe

Kathleen Karges et al.

Summary: The study found that feed-grade soybean cultivars were better adapted to the central European climate compared to food-grade cultivars, providing higher and more stable yields. Irrigation increased soybean grain yields by an average of 41%, with no additional irrigation required in years with sufficient rainfall. Gross margins for organic soybean were higher than other crops, indicating a large agro-economic potential for soybean cultivation in central Europe as a novel grain legume crop.

Annual productivity of cropping sequences: Responses to increased intensification levels

Ignacio R. Hisse et al.

Summary: Annual productivity of croplands can be increased by intensifying cropping sequences and fine-tuning agronomic management. This study evaluated the effects of different crop sequences and agronomic practices on grain yield and energy of grain yield, and found that intensified management systems led to higher annual yield and energy.

Effect of mono-, relay-, and double-crop systems on yield and profitability

Raj K. Shrestha et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the yield and profitability of different cropping systems, finding that the winter wheat + relay intercrop red clover system had the highest system yield and was most profitable. Producers can increase profitability by diversifying their cropping systems with this approach.

Assessing yield and economic impact of introducing soybean to the lowland rice system in southern Brazil

Giovana Ghisleni Ribas et al.

Summary: The introduction of soybean into the lowland continuous rice system in southern Brazil has shown an increase in rice yield and total income, despite a decrease in overall output due to the rotation. While the soybean-rice rotation has advantages such as lower labor requirements and higher benefit-to-cost ratio, economic risks and constraints from other factors need to be considered.

Legume-Modified Rotations Deliver Nutrition With Lower Environmental Impact

Marcela P. Costa et al.

Summary: This study shows that incorporating legumes into crop rotations can improve human and livestock nutrition delivery at a lower environmental cost. It highlights the need for further research on developing functional units representing multiple nutritional attributes of crops for livestock feed. The results suggest an important role for increased legume cultivation in Europe to contribute to the farm and diet sustainability goals of the European Union's Farm to Fork strategy.
