Lipid-Lowering Trials Are Not Representative of Patients Managed in Clinical Practice: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Exclusion Criteria

Martina Aeschbacher-Germann et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the exclusion criteria of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on lipid-lowering therapy and found that the majority of trials excluded patients with common diseases such as kidney disease, heart failure, and immunosuppression. This leads to limited applicability of study results and uncertainty about the side-effects and efficacy in these populations. Future trials should focus on improving diversity in recruitment strategies and promoting equity in cardiovascular research.

Assessment of cholesterol homeostasis in the living human brain

Ahmed Haider et al.

Summary: Alterations in brain cholesterol homeostasis have been implicated in neurological disorders. The development of a PET tracer that targets CYP46A1 allows for noninvasive assessment of brain cholesterol metabolism and could potentially impact disease diagnosis and treatment.

Effect of Statin Therapy on Cognitive Decline and Incident Dementia in Older Adults

Zhen Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that statin therapy in adults aged 65 and older was not associated with incident dementia, MCI, or declines in individual cognition domains. The impact of statin lipophilicity and baseline neurocognitive ability on these associations was also explored. Further confirmation from ongoing randomized trials is needed.
