Parsing variability in borderline personality disorder: a meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies

Giorgia Degasperi et al.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis of fMRI studies in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) compared to healthy controls (HC) showed divergent findings across different tasks, particularly in emotion processing. There was no consistent pattern of alteration in brain activity for BPD, indicating significant heterogeneity of processes and populations studied. A potential transdiagnostic pathophysiological mechanism involving amygdala dysfunction was suggested by the findings.
