Predictors of olfactory improvement after endoscopic sinus surgery in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps

A. K. Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the predictors of olfactory improvement after endoscopic sinus surgery among patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. Baseline absence of acute sinusitis, elevated serpin F2, and anterior rhinorrhoea predict early olfactory improvement, whereas baseline allergic rhinitis predicts late olfactory improvement. Baseline odour identification score is the strongest predictor across all time points. Patients with worse disease or baseline olfactory function may benefit more from endoscopic sinus surgery in terms of olfactory improvement.

q-Powders: a quick test for screening retronasal olfactory disorders with tasteless powders

Michal Pieniak et al.

Summary: The study found that the q-Powders retronasal identification test showed high sensitivity and moderate specificity in differentiating between subjects with olfactory disorders and those with normal olfaction, making it a useful tool for screening purposes in clinical research.

Sex, gender and the pulmonary physiology of exercise

Paolo B. Dominelli et al.

Summary: In this review, we discuss the influence of both sex and gender on the pulmonary system's response to exercise in healthy humans. We explore the rationale for considering sex and gender differences and highlight anatomical differences, with females typically having smaller lungs and airways than males. We describe how these anatomical differences impact functional aspects of the pulmonary system and how gender can further influence the response to exercise.

Associations between Taste and Smell Sensitivity, Preference and Quality of Life in Healthy Aging-The NutriAct Family Study Examinations (NFSE) Cohort

Shirley X. L. Lim et al.

Summary: Taste and smell function decline with age, but little is known about their function in young and middle-aged individuals. This study found correlations between taste and smell sensitivity and sex differences, but no evidence of age-related decline or impact on quality of life.

Correlation analysis of flow parameters in the olfactory cleft and olfactory function

Shuo Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between airflow parameters in the olfactory cleft and olfactory function using computational fluid dynamics. The results showed that airflow, airflow velocity, and airflow ratio were highly correlated with olfactory function, while mean pressure was not. The strongest correlation was found between air flow through the olfactory cleft and olfactory function.

COVID-19: Recovery from Chemosensory Dysfunction. A Multicentre study on Smell and Taste

Andreas Steenholt Niklassen et al.

Summary: Chemosensory dysfunction is common in COVID-19, with significant differences in olfactory function during and after infection. Most patients recover within the first 28 days, but some may experience persistent dysfunction and should seek specialist care.
