Predictors of Subsequent Heart Failure After Left Atrial Appendage Closure

Dae-Young Kim et al.

Summary: Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) plays an important role in preventing stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. The development of heart failure (HF) after successful LAAO is associated with a previous history of HF, left ventricular mass index, E/e', and abnormal LA strain.

Ischemic Stroke in Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy According to Presence or Absence of Atrial Fibrillation

Laurent Fauchier et al.

Summary: Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) have a high risk of ischemic stroke (IS), particularly if they also have atrial fibrillation (AF). This French study aimed to improve risk stratification by developing a French HCM score for identifying HCM patients at higher risk of stroke. The study found that the French HCM score had good accuracy and clinical usefulness in predicting stroke in HCM patients.

Association of heart failure with procedural complications and in-hospital outcomes from left atrial appendage occlusion device implantation in patients with atrial fibrillation: insights from the national inpatient sample of 62 980 procedures

Muhammad Bilal Munir et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine outcomes in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients undergoing percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) with heart failure (HF). The results showed that HF was not independently associated with major complications and in-patient mortality, but it was associated with prolonged length of stay and higher hospitalization costs.

Utilization and procedural adverse outcomes associated with Watchman device implantation

Fouad Khalil et al.

Summary: The FDA approval of the Watchman device has led to its widespread use in the USA. A study was conducted to evaluate the nationwide utilization and adverse outcomes associated with Watchman device implantation in 2016, with findings showing a low overall complication rate of 1.9% and in-hospital mortality rate of 0.29%. The complication rates were lower than those reported in major randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and were similar to the European Watchman registry findings.

Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: a European observational multicentre study

Antonio Creta et al.

Summary: Late AF relapses post-ablation are common in HCM patients, especially in those with persistent AF. Left atrium size, LV apical aneurysm, and the APPLE score might help identify subjects at higher risk of arrhythmia recurrence. The outcome of first-time cryoballoon ablation is comparable to radiofrequency ablation.

Left Atrial Appendage Closure for Primary and Secondary Stroke Prevention in Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Atrial Fibrillation: A Pilot Study

Bin-Feng Mo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of LAAC for primary and secondary stroke prevention in patients with HCM and AF. The initial results suggest that LAAC can be a safe and feasible alternative for selected patients with HCM and AF. Further studies with larger samples are required to confirm these findings.

Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion during Cardiac Surgery to Prevent Stroke

Richard P. Whitlock et al.

Summary: Surgical occlusion of the left atrial appendage has been shown to reduce the risk of ischemic stroke or systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing cardiac surgery, with no significant difference in perioperative complications between the occlusion and non-occlusion groups.
