The iron redox battery in sandy sediments: Its impact on organic matter remineralization and phosphorus cycling

Zhe Zhou et al.

Summary: Permeable sandy sediments on the global continental shelf play a crucial role in regulating organic matter and nutrient cycling in the coastal ocean. This study investigated the biogeochemical processes in North Sea sands under porewater advection and changing redox conditions. The results showed that Fe(III) oxyhydroxides served as the major electron acceptors during anoxic incubation, and Fe(II) in the solid phase acted as a rechargeable redox battery. Furthermore, excessive phosphorus release occurred after the release of Fe(II), potentially increasing net benthic phosphorus efflux under variable redox conditions.

Effect of time-varying wave conditions on the fate of nitrogen in a freshwater unconfined nearshore aquifer

Sabina Rakhimbekova et al.

Summary: This study examines the effect of time-varying wave conditions on the fate of nitrogen in a freshwater unconfined nearshore aquifer. The simulations show that time-varying wave conditions enhance mixing in the nearshore aquifer and impact nitrogen transformations. The findings highlight the importance of considering time-varying wave conditions when designing field investigations and analyzing field data.

Uncertainty Analysis and Identification of Key Parameters Controlling Bacteria Transport Within a Riverbank Filtration Scenario

Dustin Knabe et al.

Summary: Managed aquifer recharge through bank filtration is important for sustainable drinking water production, but the water quality related to transport of pathogens into groundwater systems is concerning. A reactive transport model developed for a site in Germany revealed sensitivity of bacteria transport models to inactivation coefficients, straining coefficients, and bacteria size. The model calibration highlighted the key role of permeability in colmation layers and seasonal variability in groundwater conditions on bacteria transport.

Thallium cycling in pore waters of intertidal beach sediments

Janis Ahrens et al.

Summary: Pore water data on thallium (Tl) in marine environments are limited. The study found that Tl enrichment in pore waters is associated with aerobic organic matter degradation, while Tl removal is linked to the presence of trace amounts of dissolved sulfide. Fast reaction kinetics result in Tl being removed faster and more completely compared to other trace metals like Mo, U, and Re.

Seasonal dynamics modifies fate of oxygen, nitrate, and organic micropollutants during bank filtration - temperature-dependent reactive transport modeling of field data

Isolde S. Barkow et al.

Summary: Bank filtration is an effective method to improve water quality through microbial degradation of pollutants, especially under certain biogeochemical conditions such as aquifer temperatures and oxygen supply. A 2D reactive transport model was used to investigate the behavior of organic micropollutants during bank filtration, showing significant degradation rates along subsurface flow paths with the influence of seasonal temperature variations and oxygen conditions.
