Elevation influences salt marsh crab abundance, diversity, and burrowing

Robert P. Dunn et al.

Summary: Identifying drivers of organism spatial distribution is crucial in ecology. Salt marshes have extreme gradients in abiotic conditions, which may contribute to the spatial distributions of organisms. Small-bodied consumers like crabs have strong impacts on salt marshes, but their effects across larger scales are still unclear. This study investigated the factors driving crab community dynamics in a southeastern US salt marsh, finding elevation as the key environmental predictor of crab abundance, burrowing activity, and community diversity.

Burrowing crabs and physical factors hasten marsh recovery at panne edges

Kathryn Beheshti et al.

Summary: Salt marsh loss, caused by sea-level rise, occurs along creek and channel edges as well as in the marsh interior. The factors contributing to edge loss and marsh interior dieback remain poorly understood. A two-year field investigation in a central California estuary revealed that sediment accretion, panne size, distance to the nearest panne, and burrowing crab activity are key factors influencing panne contraction. Understanding the dynamics of marsh loss in both the marsh interior and creek banks is crucial for the management of coastal habitats in the face of global change.

Crab contributions as an ecosystem engineer to sediment turnover in the Yellow River Delta

Tian Xie et al.

Summary: Burrowing crabs play an important role in the coastal estuary ecosystems by influencing the cycling of sediments and nutrients. This study analyzed the burrow morphology and local sediment properties of the crab Helice tientsinensis and found that the crabs' excavation activities significantly contribute to the turnover of sediment and nutrients. The findings provide valuable information for understanding the geochemical cycling in estuarine ecosystems.

Blue carbon stocks and exchanges along the California coast

Melissa A. Ward et al.

Summary: Salt marshes and seagrass meadows are capable of sequestering and storing high quantities of organic carbon in their sediments compared to other habitats. While seagrass meadows contained lower organic carbon stocks than salt marshes, both were higher than previous estimates and likely originated from planktonic/benthic diatoms and C-3 salt marsh plants. Additionally, carbon derived from seagrass was mainly deposited in adjacent marshes during fall senescence, with negligible amounts ultimately buried in sediment.
