Spatial localization of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids in Rauvolfia tetraphylla by high resolution mass spectrometry imaging

Marcus Daniel Brandbjerg Bohn Lorensen et al.

Summary: This study used mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) techniques to explore the biosynthetic pathway of monoterpene indole alkaloids (MIAs). The results showed that ions corresponding to intermediates of reserpine were localized in different tissues of Rauvolfia tetraphylla. By feeding stable-isotope labeled precursors, it was confirmed that these intermediates were synthesized in planta. In addition, a potential novel dimeric MIA was discovered in leaf tissue of R. tetraphylla.

Speed it up: How temperature drives toxicokinetics of organic contaminants in freshwater amphipods

Johannes Raths et al.

Summary: The acceleration of global climate change has led to increasing concerns about the interactive effects of temperature and organic contaminants. This study found that aquatic invertebrates are more sensitive to contaminant exposure at higher or fluctuating temperatures. The sensitivity may be associated with changes in toxicokinetic processes that determine contaminant concentrations and toxic effects. The study also revealed an exponential relationship between toxicokinetic rates and temperature, and the bioconcentration factors of contaminants remained relatively constant across the temperature range. The findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of chemical uptake, biotransformation, and elimination in different climate scenarios, which can enhance environmental risk assessment.

Moving Toward Standardized Toxicity Testing Procedures with Particulates by Dietary Exposure of Gammarids

Astrid Goetz et al.

Summary: This study introduces a dietary particle exposure tool for testing sparingly soluble substances or particles on gammarids, comparing different food supplements in the DEOCOTAB formulation to determine their influence on energy reserves of gammarids and finding that tabs supplemented with algae-based phyll or animal protein-based trout food were the most suitable.

Systematic Underestimation of Pesticide Burden for Invertebrates under Field Conditions: Comparing the Influence of Dietary Uptake and Aquatic Exposure Dynamics

Benedikt B. Lauper et al.

Summary: Pesticides used in agriculture can negatively impact non-target organisms in nearby streams, with bioaccumulation levels differing significantly between field and laboratory conditions. A field study on pesticide bioaccumulation in a polluted stream revealed underestimations ranging from 1.9 to 31 times, especially pronounced after rain events, suggesting potential unknown mechanisms at play. Additional factors such as slower depuration rates in field conditions and uptake from suspended solids during rain events may contribute to the discrepancies observed.
