Time-course distribution of fluorescent microplastics in target tissues of mussels and polychaetes

Mariana Calmao et al.

Summary: The majority of plastic produced in the last century has accumulated in the environment, causing serious contamination in marine environments. This study focused on the accumulation and distribution of microplastics in coastal organisms, specifically mussels and polychaetes. The results showed that both species accumulated microplastics in their digestive tracts and other organs, with higher concentrations observed at higher exposure doses. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify and study the internalization of microplastics in the organisms. This research contributes to understanding the impact of microplastic ingestion by coastal organisms and provides insights into their distribution and fate in different environmental compartments.

Ovothiol ensures the correct developmental programme of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus embryo

Alfonsina Milito et al.

Summary: This study investigates the biological relevance of ovothiol during sea urchin embryogenesis and the inflammatory response. It suggests that ovothiol may regulate cell proliferation in early developing embryos and play a key role in larval skeleton formation and inflammatory processes triggered by bacterial infection.

Summary: This study compares the biosynthesis of ovothiols in sea urchins and mussels, identifying the tissues and cells that produce the compound and highlighting similarities and differences between the two species. By improving our understanding of the biological roles of ovothiols and identifying sustainable natural sources, this study lays the foundation for future biotechnological investigations on these valuable compounds.

Ingestion of nano/micro plastic particles by the mussel Mytilus coruscus is size dependent

Shixiu Wang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the ingestion of nano/micro plastic particles in mussels is size-dependent and dynamic, with accumulation in the digestive tract and translocation in the mantle over time. The gill was not identified as a target tissue for steady particle accumulation, highlighting the importance of considering different tissues when studying the effects of plastic particles on marine organisms.

Linking effects of microplastics to ecological impacts in marine environments

Noreen Khalid et al.

Summary: Efforts to determine the ecological impacts of microplastic pollutants have increased due to plastic contamination of the environment. There is a big knowledge gap in assessing the toxicological effects of microplastics, and ecological risk assessment has become more challenging. Research on the ecology of microplastics needs to be expanded to better understand their impacts on the environment.

Tiziana Cappello et al.

Summary: The research conducted a short-term exposure experiment on marine mussels with red polystyrene microplastics, revealing the impacts on various metabolic pathways including amino acid metabolism, osmotic equilibrium, antioxidant defense system and energy metabolism. This study provides the first insights into the early mechanisms of toxicity of polystyrene microplastics in marine invertebrates.

Microplastics alter digestive enzyme activities in the marine bivalve, Mytilus galloprovincialis

Charlene Trestrail et al.

Summary: The ingestion of microplastics affects the digestive enzyme activities of mussels, with polystyrene reducing certain carbohydrase activities and increasing others. High concentrations of microplastics can lead to a significant increase in total protease activity in mussels. Other digestive enzyme activities, such as laminarinase, lipases, and lipolytic esterases, remain unaffected by the presence of microplastics.

The global threat from plastic pollution

Matthew MacLeo et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution that accumulates and is poorly reversible in the environment can have significant negative impacts such as changes to ecosystems, biological effects, and societal impacts. Therefore, a global response is needed to rapidly reduce plastic emissions through reductions in consumption of virgin plastic materials and internationally coordinated waste management strategies.
