Perfluorooctane sulfonates induces neurobehavioral changes and increases dopamine neurotransmitter levels in zebrafish larvae

Luyin Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) can cause neurobehavioral abnormalities in zebrafish larvae, affecting their neurodevelopment. This may be related to the increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in the heads of zebrafish larvae and the disrupted dopamine signaling pathway. In addition, PFOS also induces developmental damage, such as increased malformation rate and shorter body length.

Pharmacological Modulation of Serotonin Levels in Zebrafish Larvae: Lessons for Identifying Environmental Neurotoxicants Targeting the Serotonergic System

Melissa Faria et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acute effects of pharmacological modulation of the serotonergic system on cognitive, basic, and defense locomotor behaviors in zebrafish larvae. The results showed that deprenyl and fluoxetine led to impaired locomotion and cognitive function, while PCPA induced hyperlocomotion and increased escape responses. Co-exposure to agonistic and antagonist serotonin signaling drugs partially restored impaired behaviors and gene expression in zebrafish larvae.

Summary: TPHP exposure affects learning and memory behaviors by disturbing synaptogenesis and neurotransmission, as evidenced by reduced protein levels of TUBB3 and SYP in synapses, downregulated gene expression of neurotransmitter receptors, and inhibited synaptic exocytosis in the hippocampus.

Target, Nontarget, and Suspect Screening and Temporal Trends of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Marine Mammals from the South China Sea

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: The study conducted target, nontarget, and suspect screening of PFASs in the liver of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and finless porpoises stranded in the South China Sea between 2012 and 2018. Perfluorooctane sulfonate and 6:2 Cl-PFESA were the predominant PFASs found, with significantly higher concentrations in dolphin liver samples than porpoise liver samples. Temporal trends indicated increasing pollution by emerging PFASs, and a risk assessment highlighted potential reproductive injury from the emerging PFAS 6:2 Cl-PFESA in cetaceans.

Summary: This study reviewed the occurrence, transformation, and remediation of PFAS in groundwater, highlighting high concentrations of substances like PFOA, PFBA, PFOS, and PFBS. Photocatalysis was identified as an ideal technology for PFAS removal, with the potential for combining with electrochemical or membrane filtration methods for enhanced efficacy.

Hesperidin Interacts With CREB-BDNF Signaling Pathway to Suppress Pentylenetetrazole-Induced Convulsions in Zebrafish

Pallavi Sharma et al.

Summary: Hesperidin shows anticonvulsant effects in zebrafish larvae by interacting with various cellular pathways, potentially through modulation of the central CREB-BDNF pathway. The results are supported by in silico docking analysis demonstrating hesperidin's affinity for multiple receptors involved in neuroexcitation pathways.

Acute ethanol induces behavioral changes and alters c-fos expression in specific brain regions, including the mammillary body, in zebrafish

Krishan Ariyasiri et al.

Summary: The study found that acute ethanol treatment in zebrafish led to hyperactivity and reduced shoal cohesion. Changes in activity patterns were observed in certain brain regions, with intense activation of the mammillary body in ethanol-treated zebrafish. However, other gene expression levels such as vglut2b, th, crh, hdc, avp, pomc, and galn showed no significant changes in ethanol-treated fish compared to controls.
