Photosensitized Transformation of Peroxymonosulfate in Dissolved Organic Matter Solutions under Simulated Solar Irradiation

Jianxin Nie et al.

Summary: The photosensitized transformation of PMS in dissolved organic matter (DOM)-enriched solutions under simulated solar irradiation was observed for the first time. The generation of reactive species, including O-1(2), SO4 center dot-, and (OH)-O-center dot, was confirmed and quantified. The photosensitized transformation of PMS by irradiated DOM could be a useful and economical approach to generate SO4 center dot- under environmentally relevant conditions.

Mechanistic Understanding of Superoxide Radical-Mediated Degradation of Perfluorocarboxylic Acids

Lu Bai et al.

Summary: The study investigated the kinetics and mechanisms of O-2(center dot-)-mediated PFCAs attenuation, with results indicating bimolecular nucleophilic substitution as the most likely thermodynamically feasible mechanism. As O-2(center dot-) approaches PFCA, the C-F bond is spontaneously stretched, leading to bond cleavage. The solvation mechanism was elucidated, showing that although less polar solvents enhance O-2(center dot-) nucleophilicity, they also decrease PFCAs desolvation process.

Fluorescent Chromophores Containing the Nitro Group: Relatively Unexplored Emissive Properties

Meng-Chi Chen et al.

Summary: The nitro group has unique characteristics in photochemical research, such as strong electron-withdrawing ability and facile conversion to reduced substituents, making it a popular feature in various molecules. Recent studies have shown fluorescent chromophores containing the nitro group, with 3-nitrophenothiazine having a 100% emission quantum yield in nonpolar solvents. The advancement of fluorescent nitro chromophores in intramolecular charge transfer, fluorescent probes, and nonlinear properties has been systematically reviewed, with a focus on the rationalization of emission spectroscopy for insights into the structure-photophysics relationship.

Assessing the Performance of DFT Functionals for Excited-State Properties of Pyridine-Thiophene Oligomers

Bishwanath Mahato et al.

Summary: The accuracy of various density functional theory (DFT) functionals in reproducing absorption and CD spectra of pyridine-thiophene oligomers is examined in this article. Different levels of approximations in DFT functionals are discussed in reference to the ADC(2) results. Functional like CAM-B3LYP, omega B97XD, and M06-2X produce results closer to the ADC(2) results for vertical excitation energies.

Determination and Environmental Implications of Aqueous-Phase Rate Constants in Radical Reactions

Junye Ma et al.

Summary: Interest in the kinetics of radical-induced reactions in aqueous solution has been growing, with a focus on the development of reliable methods for determining rate constants (k). This review covers various methods for determining k values under steady-state and non-steady-state conditions, with evaluations on their advantages and disadvantages. The study aims to provide a comprehensive basis for choosing an appropriate method for determining k values in bimolecular reactions between target compounds and radicals in the aqueous phase.

Influence of the NO/NO2 Ratio on Oxidation Product Distributions under High-NO Conditions

Kevin J. Nihill et al.

Summary: Organic oxidation reactions in the atmosphere can be complex due to branching pathways within each molecule's reaction mechanism. This study found that NOx concentration has indirect effects on product distribution and concentration, impacting the formation of secondary organic aerosol. This highlights the importance of considering NOx concentration beyond simple RO2 branching in atmospheric oxidation experiments.

Modular Synthesis of Pentagonal and Hexagonal Ring-Fused NBN-Phenalenes Leading to an Excited-State Aromatization-Induced Structural Planarization Molecular Library

Cheng-Wei Ju et al.

Summary: In this research, a palladium-catalyzed cyclization/bicyclization strategy was developed for the synthesis of diverse pentagonal and hexagonal ring-fused NBN-phenalenes and half-NBN-phenalenes, which exhibit fluorescence in both solution and solid state. Furthermore, the study revealed the photoinduced structural planarization (PISP) phenomenon in hexagonal ring-fused NBN-pi systems, leading to the formation of excimers, and demonstrated their application in detecting nitro explosives with excellent sensitivity.
