Methane adsorption capacity measurement in shale matrix nanopores at high pressure by low-field NMR and molecular simulation

Kecheng Zeng et al.

Summary: This study focused on obtaining methane adsorption curves without excess adsorption effect through NMR experiments and density correction method by molecular simulation. The comparison between NMR measured adsorption curve and corrected excess adsorption curve showed good agreement, validating NMR experiment for measuring adsorption capacity of nanoporous media with complex structure.

Bioinspired hierarchical porous membrane for efficient uranium extraction from seawater

Linsen Yang et al.

Summary: The oceans provide an almost infinite source of uranium, but current methods of extracting uranium from seawater are not economically viable or efficient. A hierarchical porous membrane inspired by fractal structures in biology has been designed to capture uranium effectively, showing potential for fulfilling the vast promise of the oceans as a reliable and sustainable energy source.

Functionalized Activated Carbon for Competing Adsorption of Volatile Organic Compounds and Water

Xuecheng Guo et al.

Summary: This study fabricated a series of hydrophobic activated carbon by loading mixed siloxane, significantly improving the hydrophobicity of activated carbon and enhancing its competitive adsorption performance for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The siloxane-functionalized activated carbons (SACs) showed better adsorption selectivity and reusability for VOCs with different polarities, providing a new strategy for hydrophobic modification of activated carbon materials and theoretical guidance for treating gas streams with high water contents.

Low-Field Functional Group Resolved Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Mesoporous Silica

Neil Robinson et al.

Summary: Solid-fluid interactions are crucial for porous materials in various chemical processes, but the opaque nature of these systems hinders detailed characterization of interfacial phenomena. A low-magnetic-field two-dimensional H-1 nuclear spin relaxation measurement provides insights into adsorbate identity and interfacial dynamics, showcasing distinct relaxation responses correlated with adsorbate acidity. This approach offers a molecular-level perspective on interactions within optically opaque porous media.

A single-molecule van der Waals compass

Boyuan Shen et al.

Summary: Single-molecule imaging is a challenging yet beneficial technique for investigating intermolecular interactions at the molecular level, particularly van der Waals interactions at the sub-nanometre scale under confinement conditions. The use of a rotating para-xylene molecule as a pointer allows for real-space imaging and identification of changes in van der Waals interactions related to channel geometry. This study not only provides insight into host-guest interactions in porous materials, but also encourages further exploration of other single-molecule behaviors using electron microscopy techniques.
