Extending the knowledge about PFAS bioaccumulation factors for agricultural plants - A review

Lukas Lesmeister et al.

Summary: The main source of PFASs in agricultural plants is their uptake from contaminated soil. A comprehensive review of >4500 soil-to-plant BAFs for 45 PFASs from 24 studies involving 27 genera of agricultural crops revealed that factors such as plant growth stage and type can significantly affect the transfer of PFASs, and the number of perfluorinated carbons absorbed by plants can impact the levels of BAFs.

Simultaneous analysis of neutral and ionizable per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in air

Rongben Wu et al.

Summary: A new method using a nanosampler-20 air sampler was validated for the simultaneous analysis of ionic and neutral PFASs in air, showing different distribution patterns of PFASs in various materials and different recovery rates for different compounds. In real air samples, 6:2 and 8:2 FTOH were identified as the most abundant species, while FDIAs were detected in ambient air for the first time. The study indicates a shift in PFAS production from longer chain to shorter chain compounds in current industrial practices.

Legacy and Emerging Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: Analytical Techniques, Environmental Fate, and Health Effects

Richard A. Brase et al.

Summary: This article discusses the historical uses of PFAS, recent advances in analytical techniques for the analysis of these compounds, and the fate of PFAS in the environment. It evaluates current biomonitoring studies of human exposure to legacy and emerging PFAS and examines the associations of PFAS exposure with human health impacts, with a special focus on specific PFAS alternatives.

Transport and environmental risks of perfluoroalkyl acids in a large irrigation and drainage system for agricultural production

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study conducted transport analysis, source identification, and environmental risk assessment of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in a large irrigation area in northern China. The results highlight the potential threat of PFAAs to the environment and human health in different aquatic environments. The study also suggests potential impacts of PFOA and PFBS on wildlife and human populations.

Incidence of Pfas in soil following long-term application of class B biosolids

Ian L. Pepper et al.

Summary: The research investigated the impact of long-term land application of biosolids on PFAS presence in soils and found that biosolids and irrigation water are important sources of PFAS in soils for all study sites. Not all PFAS detected in biosolids were present in the soil, and the concentrations of long-chain PFAS decreased significantly with depth.

Eriko Yamazaki et al.

Summary: A simultaneous sampling of atmospheric and seawater samples was conducted in the Taiwan Western Strait, western Arctic Ocean, and the Antarctic Ocean to analyze particle and gas phase PFAS. Regional variations in PFAS concentrations and distribution were observed, indicating differences in PFAS levels in different oceanic environments.
