Seasonal changes in metal and nutrient fluxes across the sediment-water interface in tropical mangrove creeks in the Amazon region

Christiene R. L. Matos et al.

Summary: Mangrove creeks play an important role in the transport of dissolved material between terrestrial and coastal waters. This study found that seasonal rainfall patterns affect the biogeochemistry of pore water and the exchange of nutrients and metals. During the wet season, nutrient and metal retention is lower due to reduced salinity and increased reducing sediment conditions.

Stability and molecular fractionation of ferrihydrite-bound organic carbon during iron reduction by dissolved sulfide

Wei-Wei Ma et al.

Summary: The interactions between organic carbon and ferric iron oxides are crucial for the stabilization of organic carbon, but the reduction of iron(III) oxides under anoxic conditions may compromise the stability of iron-bound organic carbon. This study found that metastable iron sulfide can effectively sequester organic carbon, while the reduction of ferrihydrite is affected by the pre-adsorption and pre-coprecipitation of organic carbon.

Summary: The study found that the interaction between micro-sized goethite and EPS promotes the formation of 50-250 µm particle aggregates, while nano-sized goethite does not. In the absence of EPS, particle distribution is independent of goethite size, leading to homogeneous mineral suspensions.

Mineral characterization and composition of Fe-rich flocs from wetlands of Iceland: Implications for Fe, C and trace element export

Laurel K. ThomasArrigo et al.

Summary: In freshwater wetlands, the redox interfaces contribute to the growth of microaerophilic iron(II) oxidizing bacteria and the formation of flocs. Fe-rich surface-, ground- and spring water replenish wetlands on the volcanic island of Iceland. Accumulations of bright orange flocs, consisting of Fe minerals and microorganisms, are common features of Icelandic wetlands, and they are likely to be transported to coastal waters. However, little is known about the mineral and elemental composition of the flocs.

Thermodynamic stability reversal of iron sulfides at the nanoscale: Insights into the iron sulfide formation in low-temperature aqueous solution

Sangbo Son et al.

Summary: Understanding the formation of iron sulfides at low temperatures is crucial for interpreting the geochemical signatures recorded in sedimentary sulfide minerals. This study demonstrates that stability relations among iron sulfides depend on particle size, emphasizing the role of surface energy in their formation pathways and particle-size dependent redox equilibria.

The role and fate of organic carbon during aging of ferrihydrite

Yao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of organic carbon (OC) binding strength on the aging of ferrihydrite and the fate of associated OC. It is found that OC substantially retards the aging process and that OC with higher binding strength becomes more stable with the solid phase during aging. The results provide insights into the mechanisms behind OC persistence with minerals and its long-term preservation in natural environments.

Mechanism of Arsenic Partitioning During Sulfidation of As-Sorbed Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles

Naresh Kumar et al.

Summary: Understanding the fate and transformation mechanism of arsenic in Fe-rich sulfidic environments is crucial. This study investigated the reaction of arsenate and arsenite sorbed on ferrihydrite nanoparticle surfaces with dissolved sulfide, revealing the formation of trithioarsenate and arsenite regardless of the initial arsenic species used. The extent of transformation and thioarsenate species formed were influenced by the S/Fe ratios.

Sunlight-Induced Interfacial Electron Transfer of Ferrihydrite under Oxic Conditions: Mineral Transformation and Redox Active Species Production

Zhipeng Shu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the expanded pathways of sunlight-driven ferrihydrite transformation in the presence of dissolved oxygen. Sunlight was found to significantly facilitate the conversion of ferrihydrite to goethite. The transformation process generated redox active species and exhibited three pathways for the production of hydroxyl radicals: oxidation of water, reduction of dissolved oxygen, and photolysis of Fe(III)-hydroxyl complexes.

Synchronous sequestration of cadmium and fulvic acid by secondary minerals from Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation

Shiwen Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synchronous sequestration mechanism of cadmium (Cd) and fulvic acid (FA) during Fe(II)-catalyzed the transformation of ferrihydrite. The study reveals that increasing Fe(II) concentration promotes the transformation of lepidocrocite and goethite to magnetite, and Cd can be sequestered by magnetite. Meanwhile, FA molecules are adsorbed on goethite and magnetite, and the incomplete structure of lepidocrocite provides spaces for immobilizing carbon.

Sorption fractionation of bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on mineral surfaces and associated effects on phenanthrene sorption to EPS-mineral complexes

Yiqun Chen et al.

Summary: Microbial EPS are an important source of labile component in natural organic matter, and their sorption behavior to mineral surfaces can significantly affect the sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants. The type and surface properties of minerals, as well as the biological source of EPS, play key roles in sorption fractionation of EPS on minerals and ultimately impact the sorption affinity of apolar HOCs to EPS-mineral complexes.EPS-mineral complexes exhibited larger sorption coefficients than pristine EPS, indicating that sorptive interactions were facilitated by sorbed EPS on mineral surfaces.

Summary: This study compared the effects of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on abiotic and biotic ferrihydrite transformation, revealing that EPS could inhibit secondary Fe mineral nucleation by complexing with Fe(III) intermediates while also accelerating biotic ferrihydrite bioreduction and constraining mineralization. The chemical properties of EPS, especially polar functional groups, play a crucial role in determining its effects on ferrihydrite biotransformation.
