Treatment of wastewater containing high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen using ion exchange resins

Jiping Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, two cation exchange resins, D61 and D708, were used for ammonia nitrogen adsorption, with optimal adsorption temperature, pH, and rotation speed determined. The results indicated that physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms may coexist in the adsorption of NH4+-N, and the process is not limited by pH or rotational speed. The maximum adsorption capacities of the resins and the cost-effectiveness of using ion exchange resin for ammonia nitrogen removal were quantified, offering an efficient and economical method for wastewater treatment.

Recovery of Nutrients from Residual Streams Using Ion-Exchange Membranes: Current State, Bottlenecks, Fundamentals and Innovations

Natalia Pismenskaya et al.

Summary: The review discusses the role and classification of membrane methods in solving the problem of recovery and re-use of biogenic elements, focusing on the transition to a circular economy in the field of nutrients. It evaluates the possibilities of various methods using ion-exchange membranes, particularly electromembrane methods, for phosphate and ammonium recovery, separation, and concentration. The review is notable for summarizing both the successes and bottlenecks of ion-exchange membrane-based processes, and exploring innovations to enhance the performance of electromembrane separation processes.

Removal of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) by Cu-loaded amino-functionalized adsorbents

Biplab K. Mahata et al.

Summary: The Cu-loaded amino-functionalized SiO2 and weak-base-anion-exchange resin demonstrated advanced adsorption capability for NH4+ removal, with the adsorption process involving endothermic deprotonation and exothermic complexation. The adsorption ability increased with higher initial pH values, and coexistence of certain chloride-based salts promoted NH4+ adsorption. The adsorbent could be successfully recovered with 0.15 M NaCl solution, preserving high adsorption ability over multiple recovery cycles.
