Ozonation of lake water and wastewater: Identification of carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl-containing oxidation byproducts by non-target screening

Joanna Houska et al.

Summary: Ozonation of drinking water and wastewater leads to the formation of disinfection byproducts, including low molecular weight carbonyl compounds. A non-target workflow detected 178 carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl compounds during ozonation. The study shows the formation of versatile carbonyl compounds upon ozonation, which may include compounds with unknown toxicity.

Formation of carbonyl compounds during ozonation of lake water and wastewater: Development of a non-target screening method and quantification of target compounds

Tarek Manasfi et al.

Summary: Ozonation of natural waters leads to the formation of carbonyl compounds, which are a main class of disinfection byproducts. However, their detection in water and wastewater is difficult due to their physicochemical properties. A non-target screening method was developed to identify carbonyl compounds using a derivatisation technique and mass spectrometry. The method was applied to investigate carbonyl compound formation during ozonation of different water types. Eight target carbonyl compounds were consistently detected, with different compounds showing varying formation trends. The results highlight the importance of biological post-treatment for the removal of carbonyl compounds.

Linking reaction rate constants and isotope fractionation of ozonation reactions using phenols as probes

Jens Terhalle et al.

Summary: Ozonation is a commonly used method for disinfection and pollutant control in drinking water treatment. However, the transformation products of ozonation can be more toxic than the original compounds. Therefore, understanding the reaction mechanisms and product formation is crucial for safe application.

Ozonation of organic compounds in water and wastewater: A critical review

Sungeun Lim et al.

Summary: Ozonation has a long history in water treatment and has been used for disinfection and oxidation of pollutants. In recent years, it has been increasingly applied for enhanced municipal wastewater treatment and water reuse. The research on ozonation has contributed to a better understanding of the removal efficiency of organic contaminants and the formation of transformation products.

Managing argon interference during measurements of 18O/16O ratios in O2 by continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry

Charlotte E. Bopp et al.

Summary: Monitoring stable oxygen isotope ratios provides insights into fundamental processes in bio(geo)chemistry and environmental sciences. However, interference from argon can lead to overestimation of oxygen isotope signatures, requiring instrumental modifications and post-measurement corrections.

Kinetic isotope effects in H2O2 self-decomposition: Implications for triple oxygen isotope systematics of secondary minerals in the solar system

Hao Guo et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a ubiquitous molecule that influences the redox state of planetary surfaces. This study quantifies the isotope fractionation in H2O2 self-decomposition processes and suggests that it plays a crucial role in the triple oxygen isotope systematics of secondary minerals in our solar system. The findings provide valuable experimental data for improving models of planetary atmosphere and solar nebular evolution.

Elucidating the Role of O2 Uncoupling in the Oxidative Biodegradation of Organic Contaminants by Rieske Non-heme Iron Dioxygenases

Charlotte E. Bopp et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of O-2 activation and substrate hydroxylation of two nitroarene dioxygenases, revealing factors that determine the efficiency of oxygenated product formation. The results show that a significant portion of the enzyme's activity involves unproductive paths of O-2 activation, leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species.

Oxidant-reactive carbonous moieties in dissolved organic matter: Selective quantification by oxidative titration using chlorine dioxide and ozone

Joanna Houska et al.

Summary: A novel selective oxidative titration approach based on reaction kinetics of oxidation reactions towards certain DOM moieties was introduced to determine oxidant-reactive phenolic components. The method provides a promising tool for understanding oxidant reactive structures within complex mixtures such as DOM in drinking water and wastewater treatment.
