pH Dependence of Hydroxyl Radical, Ferryl, and/or Ferric Peroxo Species Generation in the Heterogeneous Fenton Process

Yufan Chen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that both HO center dot and [(FeO)-O-IV](2+)/ Fe-III(O2H) are concurrently produced on the surface in the acidic to near-neutral pH range, but HO center dot is the major oxidant responsible for substrate oxidation. As pH increases, the yield of both oxidants is inhibited by the decreasing availability of surface sites due to ferrihydrite particle aggregation.

Catalyzed H2O2 decomposition over iron oxides and oxyhydroxides: Insights from oxygen production and organic degradation

Hamed Vafaei Molamahmood et al.

Summary: This study investigates the decomposition of H2O2 over six different iron minerals and finds hematite and goethite to be the most promising minerals for environmental cleanup due to their high ROS production. Magnetite and maghemite are highly active for both H2O2 decomposition and O-2 production at neutral and basic pHs. Ferrihydrite and feroxyhyte, on the other hand, are problematic minerals for CHP as they have high O-2 production and negligible ROS generation at all pHs.

Hydroxyl radicals in anodic oxidation systems: generation, identification and quantification

Jiangzhou Xie et al.

Summary: Anodic oxidation is a promising treatment technology for removing organic pollutants from wastewaters. Hydroxyl radicals are the primary species used for oxidizing organics. This review discusses the methods of identifying hydroxyl radicals, debates on the validity of experimental results, and quantification methods. It also highlights the generation mechanisms of hydroxyl radicals and their utilization in electrochemical reactors. The key challenges for anodic oxidation technology are identified as eliminating errors in identification, establishing effective quantification methods, developing cost-effective anode materials, and optimizing reactor designs for maximum utilization efficiency of hydroxyl radicals.

What Are the Oxidizing Intermediates in the Fenton and Fenton-like Reactions? A Perspective

Dan Meyerstein

Summary: The Fenton and Fenton-like reactions play a significant role as a source of oxidative stress in all living systems and are utilized in advanced oxidation technologies. The reaction proceeds through the formation of intermediate complexes and can generate different oxidizing radicals depending on the pH and the presence of ligands or transition metal complexes. The formation of OH· radicals is not commonly observed in these reactions.

Reconstructing the coordination environment of single atomic Fe-catalysts for boosting the Fenton-like degradation activities

Yuanzheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study develops an advanced single-atomic iron-loaded graphitic carbon nitride (Fe-1/CN) with unparalleled efficiency for converting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to oxidants for water treatment. Acid-etching of Fe-1/CN leads to the reconstruction of conventional Fe-1-N-4 to Fe-1-C2N1 active sites, which are more favorable for PMS binding and have a lower energy barrier for O-1(2) production. The acid-etched Fe-1/CN shows 29 times higher rate constants of bisphenol A degradation compared to its pristine counterparts. The particulate catalysts, assembled into a self-supported catalytic membrane, exhibit excellent long-term durability in flow-through tests.
