Target and Nontarget Screening of PFAS in Biosolids, Composts,and Other Organic Waste Products for Land Application in France

Summary: This study characterized the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in organic waste products used in agricultural fields in France. The results showed that PFAS levels were lower in agriculture-derived wastes compared to urban and industrial wastes. Historical municipal biosolids and composts were dominated by specific PFAS, while contemporary urban waste products were dominated by zwitterionic PFAS.

Occurrence and fate of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in urban waters of New Zealand

Summary: Limited information on PFAS occurrence in aquatic matrices of countries without PFAS manufacturing, like New Zealand, was found. PFAS were detected in all wastewater samples in the study, suggesting incomplete removal in wastewater treatment plants. Further research is needed to understand the transformation processes and sources of PFAS in urban water systems.

PFAS in soil and groundwater following historical land application of biosolids

Release of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances from finished biosolids in soil mesocosms

Summary: This study collected and characterized finished biosolids from seven municipal water resource recovery facilities. The results showed a significant presence of PFAS, with diPAPs being the most common. The total oxidizable precursor assay failed to accurately measure the amount of precursors in the biosolids. Leaching experiments simulating biosolids land application demonstrated sustained leaching of PFAS over a 6-month period.

Evaluation of extraction workflows for quantitative analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: A case study using soil adjacent to a landfill

Summary: This study compared the impact of different steps in extraction workflows on the extraction of 51 PFAS species in soil, finding no significant differences in PFAS concentration between different methods and cleanup strategies. While final concentrations were similar across methods, methanol extraction showed better recovery and ENVI-Carb cleanup improved PFAS accuracy.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Australian biosolids

Summary: Biosolids samples from 19 Australian WWTPs were analyzed for 44 PFAS, with di-substituted phosphate esters being the dominant compound class contributing 45% of total PFAS mass. Higher PFAS concentrations were observed in urban locations, and there was a weak correlation between PFAS mass and percentage industrial waste contribution in WWTPs.

From Waste Collection Vehicles to Landfills: Indication of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS) Transformation

Summary: Municipal solid waste contains significant amounts of PFAS, which may transform during landfilling. Landfill leachate was found to be dominated by PFAAs, while commercial and residential vehicle leachate contained mostly PFAA-precursors, indicating precursor transformation during landfill disposal. Additional PFAS not routinely monitored were detected, with proposed degradation pathways involving diPAPs and FTS transformation into PFCAs via FTCAs.
