Steam disinfection releases micro(nano)plastics from silicone-rubber baby teats as examined by optical photothermal infrared microspectroscopy

Yu Su et al.

Summary: Steam disinfection of silicone-rubber baby teats can lead to steam etching and chemical modification of the teat surface, releasing micro- and nanoplastics that may be ingested. Research findings suggest that by the age of one year, a baby could ingest more than 600,000 microplastics.

Identification and Quantification of Nanoplastics in Surface Waterand Groundwater by Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-MassSpectrometry

Yanghui Xu et al.

Summary: This study developed a method to detect and quantify nanoparticles (NPs) in environmental water bodies, and quantified the concentrations of six selected NPs in surface water and groundwater. The results showed that NPs were widely present in the environmental water samples, with polypropylene and polyethylene as the dominant components. This study filled in the gaps in our knowledge about the levels of NP pollution.

Drinking plastics? - Quantification and qualification of microplastics in drinking water distribution systems by mu FTIR and Py-GCMS

Inga V. Kirstein et al.

Summary: The concentrations of microplastics in potable water are debated, likely due to variations in water quality, quantification methods, and analytical standards. Reliable methods for assessing microplastics in drinking water are lacking, but proper assessment requires quality assurance, adequate volume assessment, and understanding of analytical method differences. The study used validated techniques to assess microplastics in drinking water distribution systems and found low contents, suggesting low risk to human health.

Circulation of fibrous microplastic (microfiber) in sewage and sewage sludge treatment processes

Satoshi Nakao et al.

Summary: The fate of microplastics (MPs) in sewage treatment reveals that some MPs from sludge can flow back to sewage, contributing to the circulation of MPs between sewage and sludge treatment processes. Fibrous polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (microfibers) were found to be the main MPs in the sludge sidestream, highlighting the importance of their removal during sludge treatment for effectively increasing the overall removal rate of MPs.

Nanoplastics are neither microplastics nor engineered nanoparticles

Julien Gigault et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics have unique characteristics compared to microplastics and engineered nanomaterials, including transportation properties, interactions with natural colloids and light, high proportion of particle molecules on the surface, bioavailability, and diffusion times for plastic additives release. Nanoscale plastics must be considered distinct from both microplastics and engineered nanomaterials.

Application of GCMS-pyrolysis to estimate the levels of microplastics in a drinking water supply system

Alessio Gomiero et al.

Summary: Communities prioritize safe drinking water, but even in remote areas microplastic fragments have been confirmed. A study in a Norwegian urban area found varying levels of polymers in drinking water, with polyethylene, polyamide, and polyester being the most frequently detected types. The presence and distribution of microplastics in raw water can impact the drinking water supply network.
