Global mean thermosteric sea level projections by 2100 in CMIP6 climate models

Svetlana Jevrejeva et al.

Summary: This study estimates the contribution of thermal expansion to future sea level rise and finds that compared to CMIP5, CMIP6 projects higher sea level rise in the future with a larger variance. However, CMIP5 and CMIP6 show significantly different variances in sea level rise during historical periods.

Global costs of protecting against sea-level rise at 1.5 to 4.0 °C

Sally Brown et al.

Summary: This paper quantifies the economic costs of flooding and protection due to sea-level rise across different warming levels and socio-economic scenarios. It shows that annual sea flood damage costs are more influenced by socio-economic development than sea-level rise. Low income countries could reduce flood costs by protecting now, but without further adaptation, they will face growing risks and costs.

Revisiting the Ocean's Nonisostatic Response to 5-Day Atmospheric Loading: New Results Based on Global Bottom Pressure Records and Numerical Modeling

Richard E. Thomson et al.

Summary: The study examines the non-isostatic response of the World Ocean to surface air pressure forcing within the 4-6-day band using bottom pressure records from 59 sites of the global tsunami warning system. Numerical simulations show a pronounced dynamic response of the World Ocean to nonstationary air pressure fields, closely resembling the theoretical Rossby-Haurwitz air pressure mode. Both analytical and observational versions of air pressure loading accurately reproduce the seafloor pressure records in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.

Extreme sea levels at different global warming levels

Claudia Tebaldi et al.

Summary: This study used a multimethod approach to describe changes in extreme sea levels driven by changes in mean sea level associated with global warming levels from 1.5 to 5 degrees C. The findings suggest that by 2100, over 50% of the locations considered will experience present-day 100-yr extreme-sea-level events at least once a year, even under 1.5 degrees C of global warming. The tropics appear to be more sensitive to these changes compared to Northern high latitudes.
