Impact of protected areas and co-management on forest cover: A case study from Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary, Bangladesh

S. M. Asik Ullah et al.

Summary: The study shows that forest cover in PAs under co-management has decreased significantly, leading to negative impacts on biodiversity. Local community involvement in management does not effectively reduce deforestation, and the establishment of multi-use buffer zones to protect core forests is suggested.

Assessment of land use and land cover change detection and prediction using remote sensing and CA Markov in the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, India

Devanantham Abijith et al.

Summary: The study utilized GEE, TerrSet, and GIS tools to analyze LULC changes on the Northern TN coast between 2009-2019 and 2019-2030, revealing trends of decreased water bodies, increased built-up areas, and conversion of barren land and vegetation into built-up areas. The overall accuracy was above 89%, providing valuable insights for urban development planning and coastal flooding prevention.

Contributions of mangrove conservation and restoration to climate change mitigation in Indonesia

Virni Budi Arifanti et al.

Summary: Mangrove forests in Indonesia play a crucial role in mitigating climate change due to their high carbon stocks. However, deforestation rates in Indonesian mangroves have remained high, leading to significant greenhouse gas emissions. Conservation and restoration of mangroves offer a promising solution for reducing emissions and achieving the country's climate targets.

Mainstreaming Urban Agriculture: Opportunities and Barriers to Upscaling City Farming

Michael Hardman et al.

Summary: Urban Agriculture (UA) is gaining popularity worldwide and is supported by policy makers and other key actors. However, there are barriers to upscaling city farming, such as soil contamination and public hesitation. This paper explores the UK's largest urban farm and other UA sites to identify and address these barriers, proposing a way forward for enabling UA at scale.

How do disparate urbanization and climate change imprint on urban thermal variations? A comparison between two dynamic cities in Southeast Asia

Can Trong Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the combined influences of climate change and urbanization on land surface temperature and surface urban heat island in the Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan areas. The findings revealed evidence of climate change in both cities, with significant upward trends in nighttime temperature in Ho Chi Minh City. The cities have also undergone rapid urbanization, leading to changes in landscape metrics and urban growth. The study emphasized the importance of incorporating climate change resilience strategies and heat island mitigation into city planning.

Coupling characteristics of coastal ports and urban network systems based on flow space theory: Empirical evidence from China

Jianke Guo et al.

Summary: The port-city relationship can be studied from the perspectives of the port-city coupling system and spatial correlation. This study constructs two network systems for ports and cities and proposes a theoretical framework and measurement method for evaluating the coupling relationship between them. Using examples of Chinese coastal port cities, the research discusses the network characteristics and coupling patterns of port-city relations. The findings show that the port network system exhibits geographical constraints and the urban network system reduces its dependence on the space of port cities. There are diverse types of port-city coupling, but regional agglomeration characteristics are evident. Flow elements and port functions are core factors influencing the coupling characteristics of port cities.

The coupling effect between economic development and the urban ecological environment in Shanghai port

Jihong Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a system to evaluate the coordination between port industry chain development and the urban ecological environment using Shanghai Port as an example. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method and the Coupling Coordination Degree Model (CCDM) were applied to analyze the relationship between port industry development and the urban ecological environment. The research finds that the coupling coordination degree between Shanghai Port's economic development and the urban ecological environment is overall improving, but there is still room for improvement.

Urban Infill Development: A Strategy for Saving Peri-Urban Areas in Developing Countries (the Case Study of Ardabil, Iran)

Somayeh Mohammadi-Hamidi et al.

Summary: The study investigates urban infill development policies as a solution to counter urban sprawl and protect the peri-urban area of Ardabil in Northwestern Iran. It uses Landsat imagery and GIS technology to map land use and assess the potential for infill development. The study also highlights the lack of adequate outlook in Iran's city master plan regarding available land for future urban development, suggesting the need for an infill development strategy.

Vegetation Dynamics Due to Urbanization in the Coastal Cities along the Maritime Silk Road

Min Yan et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of urbanization on vegetation dynamics in coastal cities along the Maritime Silk Road. The results show significant reductions in vegetation cover in the core areas of 14 cities, while there are insignificant changes in peri-urban or urban outskirts. The study provides insights for the sustainable development of coastal cities and suggests the need for further research on the specific mechanisms through which urban factors and policies influence vegetation conditions.

Change detection and urban expansion of Port Sudan, Red Sea, using remote sensing and GIS

Emad Hawash et al.

Summary: The study analyzed land water changes, land use land cover changes, and urban expansion in Port Sudan. It found that landfill and dredging activities had negative impacts on the environment, rapid urban expansion added pressure to services and administrative sectors, and threats were identified for agricultural and mangrove areas. The lost agricultural land was converted into barren soil and slums.

Summary: Studying urban heat islands is crucial as urban land surface and heat island research are closely related. Temperature differences between urban and rural areas are influenced by building and green space coverage, with significant variations between day and night temperatures. The quality of life for urban residents is impacted by heatwaves, and urban planning should take steps to alleviate the urban heat island effect.
