Global health burden of ambient PM2.5 and the contribution of anthropogenic black carbon and organic aerosols

Sourangsu Chowdhury et al.

Summary: Chronic exposure to fine particulate matter poses a major global health risk, with domestic energy use from solid biofuel burning identified as the largest contributor to black carbon, primary organic aerosols, and anthropogenic secondary organic aerosols in the atmosphere.

Suitability of Different Methods for Measuring Black Carbon Emissions from Marine Engines

Paivi Aakko-Saksa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated three candidate methods for measuring black carbon emissions, finding that the differences in results were generally small despite some variations. Differences in measurement results may be related to the ratio of light-absorbing compounds to sulphates, particle sizes, and morphologies.

Real-Time Black Carbon Emissions from Light-Duty Passenger Vehicles Using a Portable Emissions Measurement System

Xuan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the on-road BC emissions from ten in-use light-duty passenger vehicles (LDPVs) using a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) platform. The emission factors (EFs) of vehicles with gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines were found to be higher than those with port fuel injection (PFI) engines. A strong correlation was observed between vehicle speed and BC emissions, and BC emissions were linearly correlated with particle number (PN) emissions.

Connection between lung deposited surface area (LDSA) and black carbon (BC) concentrations in road traffic and harbour environments

Teemu Lepisto et al.

Summary: Black carbon (BC) is a main component of particulate matter and is more toxic than PM2.5. Due to its size and surface area, BC particles easily penetrate into the lungs and cause a large lung-depositing surface area. This study found a strong correlation between BC and LDSA concentrations in street canyon, highway, and harbour environments in the Helsinki Metropolitan area.

In-Use Passenger Vessel Emission Rates of Black Carbon and Nitrogen Oxides

Rebecca A. Sugrue et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the emission factors of black carbon (BC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from engines on excursion vessels and ferries operating in California's San Francisco Bay. The study finds that the emissions vary across engine operating modes and that selective catalytic reduction (SCR) can reduce NOx emissions. However, some engines still exceed emission standards.

Black carbon toxicity dependence on particle coating: Measurements with a novel cell exposure method

Henri Hakkarainen et al.

Summary: Black carbon (BC) is an important climate forcer and public health hazard, but its toxicity mechanism is largely unknown. In this study, a novel exposure system was used to assess the toxicity of BC-containing aerosols at different concentrations. The results showed that organic coating and aerosol aging increased toxicity, while smaller particle size led to higher toxicity.

Sources of air pollutants from a Tier 2 ocean-going container vessel: Main engine, auxiliary engine, and auxiliary boiler

Cavan McCaffery et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the gaseous and particulate emissions from a Tier 2 oceangoing vessel using two emission control area (ECA) compliant fuels. Results showed that the novel ultra-low sulfur heavy fuel oil (ULSHFO) had slightly higher nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions for both the main and auxiliary engines, and significantly increased NOx emissions for the auxiliary boiler. Additionally, ULSHFO had higher PM2.5 and black carbon emissions, with little contribution of sulfate due to the low sulfur content in both fuels.

Optically Measured Black and Particulate Brown Carbon Emission Factors from Real-World Residential Combustion Predominantly Affected by Fuel Differences

Lu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study assessed particulate BC and BrC emissions from real-world indoor coal and biomass burning, finding that coal cake combustion had the highest BC EF and charcoal burning had the highest BrC EF. Using iron stoves for burning fuel resulted in lower BC and BrC EFs, and the difference between heating and cooking activities was not statistically significant.

Theoretical equilibration time is supported by measurement study of residence time at dilution sampling on fine particulate matter emissions from household biofuel burning

Xinghua Li et al.

Summary: Household biofuel burning is a major source of PM2.5, BC, and OC emissions globally. Dilution sampling is commonly used to study PM2.5 emissions, but the residence time in the dilution chamber remains poorly characterized for biomass combustion. This study investigated the effects of residence time on PM2.5 emissions from a Chinese household stove burning typical biofuels, finding that a residence time of 1-80 s did not significantly affect emission factors. Both measurement and theoretical simulations suggested that dilution sampling with a short residence time can provide reliable results for PM2.5 emissions from biofuel burning in specific experimental conditions.

Black carbon modeling in urban areas: investigating the influence of resuspension and non-exhaust emissions in streets using the Street-in-Grid model for inert particles (SinG-inert)

Lya Lugon et al.

Summary: Black carbon, often used as a traffic tracer, has high concentrations in streets but low at regional scale, with uncertainties in both emissions and modeling. Non-exhaust traffic emissions, such as tire and brake wear, present particularly high uncertainties. Street models often do not consider the interactions between local and regional scales. Dynamic coupling between local and regional scales can lead to increased BC concentrations in high traffic streets and decreased concentrations in low traffic streets. Resuspension of particles in streets has a low contribution to BC concentrations, with non-exhaust emissions potentially contributing as much as exhaust emissions. Sensitivity analysis shows that tire wear emission factors may be underestimated in Europe.

Summary: This study investigated the sources of black carbon in two urban environments in Helsinki, Finland, revealing that residential areas are mainly influenced by biomass burning while street canyons are dominated by vehicular emissions. Different BC sources were distinguished based on size distribution and organic oxidation state. Compared to the Aethalometer model, PMF was more responsive in identifying the sources of BC.

Summary: This study conducted 12 years of black carbon measurements in the Helsinki metropolitan area, finding that traffic and residential wood combustion are the main local sources of BC. The eBC concentrations at different sites showed clear seasonal and diurnal variation, with some sites exhibiting significant decreasing trends. Furthermore, emissions from traffic have decreased in the last decade, indicating the effectiveness of air pollution control measures and new emission standards on air quality improvement.
