Assessing agriculture's vulnerability to drought in European pre-Alpine regions

Summary: This study aims to understand the vulnerability of agriculture to drought in Europe's pre-Alpine region using a mixed-method approach. Two case studies were conducted, and vulnerability factors were identified by regional experts and combined with quantitative data analyses. Two aggregation methods were implemented, resulting in vulnerability maps that showed higher vulnerability when the factors were weighted by experts' opinions. The study highlights the value of mapping vulnerability using different aggregation methods as a sensitivity analysis.

Analysis of the relationship between yield in cereals and remotely sensed fAPAR in the framework of monitoring drought impacts in Europe

Summary: This study examines the relationship between satellite-measured fAPAR and crop yield in Europe. It finds that the correlation between fAPAR and yield varies during different periods of the year, with the highest positive correlation observed from March to October and the most negative correlation from February to May. Different regions in Europe show varying levels of correlation, with the Mediterranean regions reporting the highest correlation values and the longest periods of positive correlation, while the central European region has the most limited positive correlation values. Despite these regional differences, fAPAR anomalies are effective in distinguishing low-yield years from the rest in most cases.

Drought impact links to meteorological drought indicators and predictability in Spain

Summary: Drought is becoming increasingly severe in many regions worldwide, including Spain. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive assessment of the links between drought indicators and impacts. This study explores these links within six sub-regions in Spain and proposes a predictive model. The results show that different indicators have different predictive capabilities in different regions, and temperature and climate oscillation patterns are also associated with drought impacts. The random forest model can accurately predict drought impacts and could potentially be used as part of an early warning system.

An inventory of Alpine drought impact reports to explore past droughts in a mountain region

Summary: The study analyzes drought impact reports in the Alpine region, finding agriculture and livestock farming to be the most severely affected sectors, especially in summer and early autumn, with less prominence of issues related to public water supply compared to the whole of Europe. As time progresses, the number of impact reports from drought events increases, shifting from agriculture-dominated impacts to encompassing diverse impact types covering forestry, water quality, industry, and more.
