Adsorptive removal of metformin on specially designed algae-lignocellulosic biochar mix and techno-economic feasibility assessment

Goldy De Bhowmick et al.

Summary: The study found that activated macroalgae biochar (MACAC) and microalgae biochar (MICAC) exhibited superior adsorption performance for metformin hydrochloride (MET), with maximum adsorption occurring at a pH of 7 and up to 76% removal of MET. Activation strengthened chemisorption, leading to the formation of oxygen-containing surface functional groups, and the lowest zeta potential observed at pH 7 enhanced the electrostatic force of attraction for both biochars.

Rationally designed and hierarchically structured functionalized aluminium organic frameworks incorporated chitosan hybrid beads for defluoridation of water

Antonysamy Jeyaseelan et al.

Summary: In this study, aluminium-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were developed for defluoridation. The MOFs exhibited high selectivity, porosity, and surface area. However, the powder form of the MOFs had limitations in practical applications. To overcome these limitations, chitosan-supported MOFs were developed for effective fluoride adsorption. The synthesized beads showed high defluoridation capacities. Various parameters were investigated to optimize the adsorption process. The study also evaluated the thermodynamic and kinetic properties, as well as the reusability and suitability of the beads in field conditions.

Chemistry of Chitosan Aerogels: Three-Dimensional Pore Control for Tailored Applications

Satoru Takeshita et al.

Summary: Chitosan, derived from food waste, is a biopolymer with high biocompatibility and easy chemical processability. Porous chitosan materials vary widely in properties, from supercritically dried mesoporous chitosan aerogels to very light freeze-dried macroporous scaffolds. Despite impressive performance at the laboratory scale, the highly porous nature of chitosan amplifies both its beneficial functionality and drawbacks, posing serious barriers to industrialization.
